these bestialities will be held responsible for them."

He stated that the "common "people of Slovakia, Bo-
hemia, and Moravia are raising their voices against the
atrocities which have resulted in the deportation of 72,000
Czech Jews and 76,000 Slovak Jews." Ernst Frischer,

of action by the neutral countries to save, at least, Jewish
children in Hitler-dominated territory.

Our

CHILDREN'S
CORNER

Dear Boys and Girls:
Jewish history and tradition is
full of legends and interesting
stories. Most of them were re-
lated by our rabbis.
Today . I would like to share
with you a story on man's in-
ability to see God. In future col-
umns you will be treated to other
stories.

We are all exchanging New
Year greetings at this time. As
Jews, we celebrate the Hebrew
New Year on the first day of the
month of Tishri. We do not re-
sort to hilarity but spend our
time in synagogues, praying to
God and in meditation. But on
the civil New Year we have been
in the habit of sharing with our
neighbors in a spirit of joyous
celebration.

This year, however, there will
not be that spirit of abandon and
hilarity. There is too much suf-
fering in the world for us to do
that. That is why President
Roosevelt has issued a proclama-
tion for special services of wor-
ship and affirmation to be held in
all houses of worship on Jan. 1.

I wish you all a happy civil
New Year and I hope that 1943
will bring us all good tidings.
UNCLE DANIEL.

On Seeing God
Rabbi Joshua was a wise and
learned man. His reputation had
traveled to distant lands and one
day the Emperor, who had heard
of his great wisdom, came before
Rabbi Joshua to see for himself
if the stories he had heard of this
humble man could be true.
"Rabbi," said the Emperor, "I
have heard that you know the
answer to all things. I should
like to see your God."
"You overrate my powers,"
said the Rabbi. "I am but a
humble teacher. I cannot show
you God."
"I will not take 'no' for an
answer," replied the Emperor.
"NeWs of your wisdom has
reached my mighty throne. If
you are as great as men say that
you are, you will meet my de-
mand: You must. show God to
me."
"Come with me, then,". said
Rabbi Joshua, and led the Em-
peror into a field where there
was no shade; only the wide open
spaces and the hot sun shining
down upon the earth, for it was
the month of Tammuz, in mid-
summer when the sun is at its
height. Standing in the middle of
the field, Rabbi Joshua turned to
the Emperor, and said: "Look up

mto sky, and you will behold -
God."
The Emperor raised his eyes to
the sky, but quickly placed his
hand before them. "I cannot look
into the sun," he cried.
"Behold, then, the truth of my
words," answered Rabbi Joshua.
"This sun is only one of God's
servants, and yet you cannot look
at it. How, then, can you expect
to look upon God, Who is most
powerful of all?"
"You are right," said the Em-
peror, "and you are wise. Men
have not exaggerated the tales of
your learning." And the Emperor
went back to his palace • with a
better understanding of God's
greatness.
