This honor is being extended to

At the broadcast during which
the Altmans celebrated the event,
on Station WJLB, Mandell Bern-

Murphy. Offering his regrets
at being unable to attend the
broadcast, Mr. Justice Murphy
expressed satisfaction over the
effort. to plant 1,000 trees in
Palestine in the Altmans' honor.
He wrote in part as follows:
"One never forgets friends who
stood by him in dark days, nor
does one forget friends who zeal-
ously helped feed the poor when
they were hungry. Hyman and
his lovely wife reflect the stirring
social justice of the old Hebrew
prophets from whom we get many
of our social concepts. It is a
grand thing that the Jewry of
Detroit recognizes their fine con-
tribution in the community by
agreeing to plant 1,000 trees in
Palestine."

Nazi Thinkers, Talkers, Eaters
It is reported that the follow-
ing story is going the rounds in
Germany:
Don't think, for the Fuehrer
does that for you; don't talk, it
is done for you by Goebbles;
don't eat, Goering does that for
you.

What They Say in Prague
This is a casual comment on
the general situation passed by
word of mouth by the Czech
patriots in the streets of Prague:
"Since 1933 I should not like
to be a Jew; since 1938 it is
hard, indeed, to be a Czech; yet
in 1943 I should not like to be
a German."

Nazi Arithmetic
German officials in occupied
Czechoslovakia are known for
their cynical answers to the com-
plaints made by the Czech pop-
ulation. The record in cynicism
is held by the Nazi commissar
in Pilzen. When the representa-
tive of the Czech population pro-
tested in the name of 97 percent
of the Czech population in the
city against elimination of
Czechs from the city administra-
tion, he replied dryly: "Ninety-
seven percent of the Czech min-
ority does not guarantee the sat-
isfaction of the German ma-
jority, three percent strong. The
Germans cannot be ruled by the
minority. The request is re-
jected."
