Dr. Goldstein—A Great Leader

By FRED M. BUTZEL

The presence of Dr. Israel Goldstein in Detroit this •
week, in connection with the conference of the Jewish
National Fund, is a source of great satisfdction to our
people.
When a man has held the office of president of the •
Jewish National Fund for 10 years, during
which time its productivity and general
acceptability have improved to a great
extent, it" is only proper to attribute a
large share of the improvement 'to its
president.'
Dr. Goldstein is a man of tremend-
ous energy, simplicity and directness.
While other Palestinian funds must be
promoted in such a way as to appeal to Fred M. Butzel
persons who have very diverse ideas re-
garding the future of Palestine, .the Jewish National
Fund, by definition, involves a permanent status for the
Jewish people in Palestine and the development of a
homeland.
Dr. Goldstein, as head of the Synagogue Council of
America, also seems to appeal to the various and some-
times conflicting groups of the Jewish faith. It is to be
hoped that the Synagogue Council of America in the
future will play an even larger role in the matter of
Jewish public relations, which is so muddied by the
curious arrangements between the Anti-Defamation Lea-
gue, the American Jewish Committee and the American
Jewish Congress. There are very good reasons why the
synagogue should not dominate Jewish life in America,
but I can think of none why it should not be concerned
with and consulted in some of the most important mat-.
ters affecting Jewish life.

Sunday nights have been set aside by the Standard Club, in the Book-
Cadillac Hotel, for U.S.O. narties. Dr. Peter M. Bernstein is shown in this photo-
graph refereeing a checker match between the Army and Navy at one of the
recent Standard Club parties. A complete account of the services provided for
the men in the armed forces of our country by the Jewish community of Detroit
will be found on nage six of this issue of The Jewish News.
