Quotation of the Week
"People of your faith went all over the world and in every corner you
have built temples of worship. Those temples have seen conquerors come
and go. I do not share in any pessimism concerning the future. I have seen
the onward march. It may be that we cannot build to perfection, but if we
do not build better, then we shall have failed miserably. I want to see all
peoples have the blessings of liberty. It was that for which I fought more
than twenty years and it is that for which I fight now through public
advocacy.

Commentary
By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

A NEW KIBETZARNIE
Cafe Royal of New York has been
played up so much by columnists as a
gathering place for artists and writers
that other `kibetzarnies" are overlooked.
How about Tiptoe Inn, also in New
York, on the corner of 86th St. and
Broadway, where important New York
leaders hold court?
Someone should sit in on some of these
sessions which are attended by important
figures in Jewish life. They will hear fact
and rumor, gossip and serious comment
on Jewish life.
These "kibetzarnies" have their place
in the life of Jewish leaders who need
relaxation and who must have an outlet
from serious business for their natural
Bohemian instincts.
Nevertheless, the comment of the wife
of one of the frequenters of the new
"kibetzarnie" will be of interest. This
lady refused to accompany her husband
on his visits to the intimate sessions.
"They last too long," she remarked. "Ap-
parently no one wants to leave too soon,
lest he, too, be dissected."
What a commentary on Dame Rumor
and Gossip!

YIDDISH RADIO SWING
Those who are concerned over the
status of the Yiddish language in this
country will do well to study the trends
in- Yiddish radio hours. Jewish news-
papers are losing advertising space be-
cause firms like the famous Manischewitz
Matzo Co. are turning to radio instead.
And—they are inclined to use English
almost exclusively.
Take, as an instance, the Manischew-
itz "Yiddish Swing" broadcast, which is
supervised by the company's advertising
manager, Herman Younglieb. This hour
is said to have an audience of hundreds
of thousands. Sent on the airways from
the Capitol Hotel, which is taking the
place of the Broadway Central Hotel as a
gathering place for Jews, since the latter
was taken over by the U. S. Army, "Yid-
dish Swing" has a visible audience of
from 500 to 1,500 every Sunday noon in
Capitol Hotel Ballroom. It is an enthu-
siastic audience that enjoys the swing,
the frequent references to Jewish oc-
casions, holidays and Sabbaths, etc., and
the occasional Jewish songs.
The cast of 23 musicians and enter-
tainers does an interesting job. But the
striking thine, about this broadcast is that
it is an all-English affair, that the Jewish
references are rare.
That's • where our question about the
popularity of Yiddish comes in. If a large
firm, which caters almost exclusively to
Jews, feels that English covers the needs,
what actually is the status of Yiddish?
Yiddishists may well look into this
problem. True, Yiddish remains popular
with the masses of Jews, and even many
of the young people resort to "mame-
loshens." You can't help loving the juicy
terms of the language of millions of Jews.
Yet—who will say that its position is very
secure? Our children will be in better po-
sition to provide the answer to this ques-
tion, a decade from now.
