Remove the Shadows!
Former Detroiter Lawrence
Lipton warns, in a syndicated
Independent Jewish Press Serv-
ice article, of "Shadows on the
Wall." Coining the phrases "Ring
Out George Norris, Ring In Ham
Fish" and "Ring Out Our
Friends, Ring in Our Foes,"
he . warns us of impending
troubles and sees a black picture
ahead.
It is so easy to build up a
good case for gloom! Therefore,
for the sake of avoiding panic,
we should analyze our position
and see whether Mr. Lipton
and those who think as he does
are right.
Dr. L. B. Birkhead of Friends
of Democracy, for instance,
writes us: "I don't believe that
I am unduly pessimistic over the
' results of the election. It is dis-
astrous to have Ham Fish,
Stephen Day, Curly Brooks,
Clare Hoffman and their kind in
Congress for another two years."
Wherein is the situation
worse? After all, it is not true
that Ham Fish is being "rung"
in. He is only being returned--
only with less glory,, and with
less than half the 'majority he
has been used to. Furthermore,
Norris' defeat is due to the em-
inent Senator's indecision and
his having insisted on being an
independent candidate.
The point your Commentator
makes is that it is useless to try
to create "shadows." What we
need to do is to dispel them.
What a Discovery!
The trouble with Lipton is
that he rehashes old arguments
and hoary advice. His entire
credo on standing together is not
new, and his appeal to Jews .to
work shoulder to shoulder with
liberals in fighting against bigot-
try dates back not only to
Coughlin and his • cohorts but
even to the anti-Catholic cru-
saders of the last century and
to the Know-Nothings.
Certainly, eternal vigilance is
the price of liberty. But, why
assume that a new situation has
arisen?
Also, why does Lipton forget
the "Im Ein Ani Li, Mi Li" eh
I am not for myself, who will
be for me?") admonition of
nearly 2,000 years ago when he
speaks in terms of "we must
be our own best friends?"
Be on Lookout—Make Friends
Yes, we have serious obliga-
tions. We must be on the look-
out. We must be on guard
against reactionaries—Jews as
well as non-Jews.
But the way to avoid trouble
is to make friends among the
liberals, to solidify our forces,
to approach the issues with con-
fidence and with a sense of cer-
tainty that the American spirit
of fair play will survive all
crises.
No, Lawren'ce, I refuse to ac-
cept your attitude of despair
and will not permit shadows to
blacken our existence. Rather
will I recognize that there al-
ways are dangers on the paths
to freedom and that we must be
alert but not fearful.

JEWISH NEWS

Our

CHILDREN'S
CORNER

Dear Boys and Girls:

Today we begin to celebrate
Hanukah—the great Festival of
the Maccabees.
It is a most joyous occasion,
and all of you should make the
best of it. Especially now, when
-we are embroiled in a world war,
peoples of all faiths admire her-
oes who fight for right and jus-
tice. Our Maccabean heroes were
among the greatest heroes of all
time, and you should. learn the
complete story of Hanukah and
the ideals for which it stands.
Peoples of all faiths have al-
ways admired the Maccabees.
The late President Theodore
Roosevelt was one of them. On
Dec. 17, 1908, President Theodore
Roosevelt wrote from the White
House in Washington the follow-
ing letter to Dr. Stephen S. Wise:
"May I thru you extend my
hearty good will to the little
Jewish boys and girls who on
Sunday evening are to meet at
the Riis Settlement? I wish I
could be present, in view of the
fact that it is to take the form
of a Maccabean festival, for as
you know, the fine loyalty and
valiant achievements of the Mac-
cabees have always made them
favorite heroes of mine. It is a
good thing that the Jewish boys
and girls should keep their pride
in and- admiration for their- own
heroes of early days and such
pride and admiration, instead of
hindering them, will help them to
the friendliest and most brother-
ly relations with all their fel-
low-Americans."
This is such a thrilling senti-
ment that I felt I must share it
with you, so that you should be
more proud than ever of your
Maccabean heritage.
Dr. Wise tells me that Presi-
dent Theodore Roosevelt once re-
marked to him personally: "I
consider the Maccabees' defense
of - their country one of the most
brilliant feats in the history of
mankind." .
I am sure that a knowledge of
the importance of Hanukah will
make you proud Jews and more
devoted Americans who derive
strength and courage from a
great heritage.
I wish you all a very happy
Hanukah.
UNCLE DANIEL.
* * *
CARMI TELLS WHY HE
LIKES HANUKAH
I like Hanukah more than most
holidays. It's a man's holiday—
that's why.
Take the other holidays —
Purim, for example, what's in
that? There's a fellow named
Haman, who wants to kill out all
the Jews,—the brute! What did
the Jews do? Go out and fight?
Fight for their lives? No! They
let Esther go and beg the King
to spare them—There isn't much
to that, is there?
Or you take Pesach. Now, I
have nothing against it, mind
you. I like the kneidlach too, well
enough—but the Haggadah, you
read it—and what do you find?

Friday, December 4; .1942

The Jews are in a tight fix be-
tween that devii of a Pharaoh and
the deep. sea. What do they do?
Fight the Egyptians? Swim across
the sea? No! They stand there,
crying and wailing for God to
perform a miracle to split the
Red Sea for them to walk across.
Now, there isn't much to that, is
there?
But Hanukah is different! None
of that quaking and trembling
and baby stuff and all that. They
hit us—we hit back as hard as we
could. We were oppressed—we
rebelled and raised such a rump-
us that that old tyrant of an
Antiochus felt as uncomfortable
on his throne as a snowball on
a red-hot stove. We gave him a
lovely time for his money, we did.
Judas Maccabeus! There's a
man for you! He got together a
few red-blooded fellows, with
lots of pep and plenty of pluck,
gave them swords and spears and
bows and arrows, and made an
army out of them. Then he led
them against the enemy, and he
didn't send them orders by long
distance telephone either —
marched right at the head of the
army, and led the charge himself.
"Come on boys!" he cried, "Let's
fight for God and country!" And
they went over the top, too!
Those hirelings of Antiochus
weren't much good except to
manicure their nails and to look
smart

Then when the battle was won
they went back to Jerusalem,
cleaned the Temple, and lit the
great Menorah. That's why we
eat latkes on Hanukah, and burn
candles for eight, days. It's be-
cause we want to remember
Judas Maccabeus and his men—
that's why, and some day—you
needn't laugh because I'm only a
boy—some day, I tell you, we're
going to be in Palestine again and
rebuild that Temple, and restore
the.. great Menorah, and be just
as brave and strong as we used
to be when Judas Maccabeus was
alive.
We're going to do it — just
watch!

An exhibit of the work of
Arthur Szyk, Polish-Jewish art-
ist, will open at the Jewish Com-
munity Center, Woodward at
Holbrook, on Tuesday evening.
Born in Poland, Mr. Szyk stud-
ied art in Paris. Just before the
outbreak of the first World War
he was in the Orient and Asia
Minor and studied Mohammedan
art for more than a year. Some
of his works have been hung in
the Luxembourg and the Nation-
al Library. He has illustrated
many books, among them "The
Book of Esther," "The Tempta-
tion of St. Anthony" by Flau-
bert, "Jacob's Well" by Pierre
Benoit and Ludwig Lewisohn's
"The Last Days of Shylock." He
created a series of 38 miniatures
dealing with the American Rev-
olution called "Washington and
His Times." The series, which
took two years to complete, was
bought by President Moscicki of
Poland, who presented it to Pres-
ident Franklin D. Roosevelt. The
collection now hangs in the
White House. At the time of the
presentation, a larger exhibition
of Szyk's work was held in the
Library of Congress in Wash-
ington.
A volume of cartoons called
"The New Order", satirizing the
Fascists and Nazis in gurope, ap-
peared in 1941.
The exhibit will be on display
at the Jewish Center Monday
through Friday, 2 to 5 and 7:30
to 10 D. m., and Sunday 1 to 5
p. m. It will be open to the public
without charge.
