What's Happening in Detroit

ETROIT'S cultural activities are expected to
take on new • significance now that the major
fund-raising campaign is over. With the War Chest,
which was such a marvelous success, now over, the
total exceeding $7,000,000, the educational institutions,
the Jewish Center activities, the work in behalf of
men in service, are certain to take on new strength.
The Jewish Center is arranging a number of con-
certs, art exhibits, parties for servicemen, etc. The
United Hebrew Schools, the Yiddish cultural groups
and other movements are continuing their educational
efforts.

The Zionist Activities

Under the leadership of Abraham Cooper, president
of the Zionist Organization of Detroit, numerous ac-
tivities are planned here. Mr. Cooper is anxious that
Detroit should fulfill its quota to help wipe out the
Z. 0. A. deficit and should subscribe a minimum of
$35,000 towards the Jewish National Fund loan of
$2,500,000.
An interesting report on Zionist achievements in
this country was submitted last Friday noon. by Simon
Shetzer, national executive director of the Zionist'
Organization of America, who was a guest in the
city over the week-end, at a luncheon arranged in his
honor at Club Madrid,
In Zionist labor ranks, arrangements are being
made for the 1943 . Gewerkshaften campaign, and a
successful turnout is expected at the concert on Sun-

Emma Shever.

Rabbi Fram to Discuss Magnes' Views

Chapter One of the Zionist Organization of Detroit,
composed of a group of younger members . of the
local Zionist movement, is conducting an interesting
cultural program. At its meeting next Thursday, 8:30
P. M., at the home of Miss Marian Hoffman, 8812
LaSalle, Rabbi Leon Fram will discuss the attitude
of Dr. Judah L. Magnes, chancellor of the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem, towards Jewish aspirations
in Palestine and the Arab question. Rabbi Fram's
address will feature one of a series of forums on
issues in which American Jews are vitally interested.
Visitors are welcome to this meeting.

Judge Charles C. Simons spoke at a meeting of the
Philosophical Society on Nov. 24 . . . Brenner Branch
of the Jewish National Workers' Alliance had a lively
discussion on the subject "What Is Labor's Attitude
Toward the Present War?" at a meeting at the home
of Irving Miller on Nov. 18. The organization will
hold cultural meetings on the second and fourth
Wednesdays of each month at the Rose Sittig Cohen
Building, Irving Soref, president, and Irving Shro-
deck, secretary, announce . . . Saul R. Levin is con ?
ducting a class in Spanish for Navy officers stationed
in the Detroit area. Mr. Levin, who is Consul for
the Honduran Republic in Detroit, is giving this class
on a voluntary , basis.

Flint to Honor Rabbi Fineberg

Of interest to Detroiters is the tenth anniversary
celebration of Rabbi S. Z. Fineberg's ministry in Flint,
to be observed on Dec. 6, at a Hanukah testimonial
banquet. A number of Detroit guests will be present
at the celebration.
Rabbi Fineberg's address at Flint's Armistice Day
celebration attracted wide attention.
"Yea, fellow citizens," he declared in his conclusibn,
"it is with deep and 'profound confidence that I pro-
claim we in Flint will praise the Lord and make the
ammunition."

Rabbi Feuer's "Why a Jewish State"

Another item of interest to Detroiters is Rabbi
Leon L. Feuer's "Why a Jewish State," which was
published by Richard R. Smith, 120 E. 39th St., New
York.
Rabbi Feuer, of Toledo, who has made a host of
friends in Detroit, reviews in popular style the Zion-
ist problem and makes a strong case for the plea for
a Jewish state. He lauds the achievements of the
Palestinian Jews, shows how their backs have been
straightened by the spirit acquired in the course of
their national redemption activities and pays tribute
to their vision for a rebuilt Zion.
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver is the author of the fore-
word to this book. He endorses Rabbi Feuer's views,
lauds his approach to the subject and points to Zion-
ism as the only answer to the problem of Jewish
misery and homelessness.

Twenty Years Ago This Week

Compiled From the Records of the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency

BERLIN—Christmas has been fixed as the day for
massacres of Jews by the "National Socialists," the
reactionary and anti-Semitic party in Bavaria led
by Hitler, often referred to as the German Musso-
lini. Boxes labelled "Jewish Massacre Fund" have
been placed in cafes in Munich, to which those in
sympathy with the National Socialists' program of
Jew-extermination are asked to contribute.

MOSCOW—Dr. Rosen who arrived here to take
charge of reconstruction work for the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, stated that 100 tractors will
arrive in Odessa in December to be divided into
ten groups and each group will have an American
foreman. These groups will plough the Jewish
colonists' land and also the land of the neighboring
peasants.
JERUSALEM—The Vaad Leumi tendered a recep-
tion to - Dr. Chaim Weizmann who recently arrived
in Palestine. Dr. Weizmann, who is staying at
Government House, conferred with High Commis-
sioner Sir Herbert Samuel on the question of the
formation of the Jewish Agency, which is to co-
operate with the Palestine Government in the task
of developing a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
LONDON—The distinction of being the first Jew
