HE REIvIARKABLZ success of the Detroit War
Chest calls for granting credit where it is right-
fully due. While the entire community set-up grew in
stature as a result of. this drive, and the Community .
Fund staff contributed a great share of campaign ex-
perience to the great humanitarian effort, the work of
the Jewish Welfare Federation and Allied Jewish Cam-
paign executives was in great measure responsible for
the triumph attained by the War Chest.
Percival Dodge, director of the Community Fund,
Credited Isidore Sobeloff with a major share of the
success of the campaign: While Mr. Sobeloff remained
in the background, the War Chest staff knew all along
that he was one of the mainstays in the campaign.
A Take-Off on Campaign Sessions
Thursday noon workers rested from their labors for
the War Chest. They were to meet at the Victory
Dinner instead of the usual campaign luncheon. The
staff took advantage of the holiday to hold a luncheon
of its own during which they staged a "take-off" .on
campaign luncheons. Mrs. Henry Wineman, who
watched the proceedings from an adjoining room,
was enthused over the hilarious event which was
justified by advance information received by the
staff that the campaign was going over the top.
. Mr. Sobeloff was master of ceremonies—and he is as
adept at that as he is at campaign management. Louis
Miriani of the Legal Aid Bureau acted the part of a
Scout. Esther R. Prussian had a Aare in the take-off
which assumed the form of a minor celebration of the
War Chest drive's success. And it was a well-earned
party even if it was self-arranged by the staff.
Detroit's Gift to the Z.O.A.
Simon Shetzer, who is expected in.Detroit this week-
end for the Bar Mitzvah of his nephew, William Shetzer
Frank, played an important role at the recent annual
Convention of the Zionist Organization of America, held
in New York.
As national executive director of the Z. 0. A., Mr.
Shetzer submitted his first report and indicated a large
increase in members and a substantial reduction in the
deficit.
Detroit Zionists are gratified with the esteem in
Vtril ich Mr. Shetzer is held nationally because he is this
community's gift in manpower to the national move-
ment.

Huberman's Second Visit Here
Our attention is called to the fact that Bronislaw
Huberman's concert at the Masonic Temple on Nov. 29
will be his second visit to Detroit.
Mr. Huberman first appeared here as soloist with
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra six years ago, and
was a great sensation. He was here on invitation of the
late Ossip Gabrilowitsch who was greatly interested in
the Palestine Symphony Orchestra of which Mr. Huber-
man was the founder.
Many rate Mr. Huberman is the world's greatest
living violinist. He has earned it from the Jewish people
that a packed house should welcome him when he
comes here on Nov. 29.
Emma Shever, the popular Detroit soprano who has
appeared in concerts in several countries, will be
Huberman's assisting artist at his Detroit concert. •
Pisgah's 85-Year-Old Charter
Pisgah Lodge, whose 85th anniversary will be ob-
served this Sunday, is at present a part of District No. 6
of Bnai Brith. Originally it was part of District No. 2.
Pisgah received its charter on Nov. 24, 1857. It was
signed by Rabbi Isaac M. Wise, founder of Reform
Judaism in America and of Hebrew Union College of
Cincinnati, who was president of Bnai Brith District 2.
Besides Aaron Droock, who was president of District
6 three years ago, two other members of Pisgah Lodge
served as presidents of District 6: the late Adolph
("Daddy") Freund and Bernard Ginsburg.
Charter members of Pisgah Lodge were: Jacob Silber-
man, Emanuel and Seligman Schloss, M. E. Fechheimer,
Louis Benfy, Marcus Cohen, S. Sykes, Herman Fried-
man, L. Bressler, Simon Heavenrich, S. Schwab, A. Hart,
Moses Hershman.
Rabbis, Children Honor Dr. Hershman
Dr. A. M. Hershman's departure on Tuesday for a
sabbatical semester of rest was the signal for numerous
gatherings in his honor. The two most significant were
the luncheon of the Detroit rabbis and the assembly of
the Shaarey Zedek Sunday School pupils. There were
other events, including several private parties and the

The gathering of the rabbis was significant because
it was the first occasion when all the rabbis of the city
had assembled at one event. Rabbi Isaacc Stollman was
the only one missing, having been out of the city. All
the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox rabbis were
present. Addresses were delivered by Dr. Leo M. Frank-
lin, Rabbis Moses Fischer, Leon Fram, Morris Adler,
Max J. Wohlgelernter and Joseph Thumin. Rabbi Jos-
hua Sperka presented Dr. Hershman with a gift on be-
half of the rabbis, and Rabbi Joseph Eisenman led in
offering the traditional prayer. Dr. B. Benedict Glazer,
throilgh whose efforts the affair was arranged, presided.
At the assembly of all the 1,200 pupils of the Shaarey
Zedek Sunday School on Sunday morning, Rabbi Hersh-
man was honored at impressive ceremonies. Rabbi
Adler presided and Sanford Perlis spoke for the pupils.
Rabbi Hershman responded in brief remarks in which
he told the boys and girls of their importance to the
synagogue and the community. Miss Shirley Subar and
Cantor J. H. Soneriklar led the assembly in singing.
Dr. Hershman delivered the sermon at the Sabbath
morning services in Shaarey Zedek, and the congrega-
tion bade him farewell at that time.

He Finally Signed Up Mrs. F.D.R.
For five years Private Harry
Goldstein, A.E.F., of Newark, N.
J., broke wishbones, greeted the
first twilight star and blew eye-
lashes off his palm, always with
the same little wish in mind: "If
only Eleanor Roosevelt would ,
give me her autograph." This had
been going on ever since he tried
and failed to get her signature
during a visit to Washington.
Recently, however, Mrs. Roose-
velt was visiting the Women's
Voluntary Services canteen in
London. Private Goldstein, who
had stopped in at the canteen
that day, little dreaming how
close he was to the realization of
his dream, gave a whoop of joy,
whipped out a blank piece of
paper and reeled toward the
First Lady.
Sorry, said she, but how could
she sign her name when there
