Jews Seized in France .
The terror of the Jews of un-
occupied France, steadily mount-
ing as Laval yielded to the Nazis,
reached its climax as the Hitler
troops took over • all of France
and applied the severest mea-
sures to the Jewish occupants.
The first 9,000 Jews were seized
in Marseilles, Toulouse and other
south French towns and deported
to • the interior of the country, to
await further stringent action.
" It is reported that the Swiss
and Spanish governments have
given orders that the frontier
gu1rds be strengthened to pre-
veikt. the entry of Jewish refu-
gees from France.
Somervell Weighs
Tactics of Master
General, Moses
NEW YORK (JPS)—The lead-
ers of America's great war effort
may well benefit from a careful
study of the masterful general-
ship displayed by Moses in an-
cient times, Lieut. Gen. Brehon
B. Somervell, commanding gen-
eral of the Services of Supply of
the United States War_ Depart-
ment, told the Academy of Po-
litical Science this week.
Gen. Somervell hailed Moses
as "one of the greatest masters"
of the art of logistics, the • vital
science of transportation and
supply in war.

Palestine Hears Bells
The bells, rung throughout
bondage, Gen. Somervell said:
"When he- led his people out of
captivity he succeeded because
he employed logistics on a grand
scale. Feeding his people in the
wilderness was a triumph in the
commissary department, clothing
them was a job for quarter-
masters, hauling their camp gear
fell to his transportation divi-
sion, his signal corps kept up
communications . . . and I wish
our engineers today could em-
ploy whatever scheme he used
to cross the Red Sea!"

North Africa has brought reac-
tions of tension and excitement
to the Yishuv. The latest gratify-

coupled with Hitler's move into

of jubilation in both urban and
rural communities.
Rejoicing, however is some-
what tinged with a melancholy
note over the possible fate of the

occupied France, which has now
fallen into the hands of the Nazis.
Among these Jews are. Leon

American Foreign
Legion Is Planned;
Jews Are Included
WASHINGTON, D. C. — High
Government circles in Washing-
ton have given study to a pro-
posal submitted by a group of
outstanding Americans of Greek
and Yugoslavian origin for the
creation of a Foreign Legion un-
der American auspices to com-
prise nationals of Yugoslavia,
Greece and other Balkan states
as well as anti-Fascist Italians,
Hungarians and Rumanians, to-
gether with Jews of Palestine
and the Middle East, for use in
commando operations and as a
spearhead for a big invasion of
Europe.
This information is revealed by
Louis Adamic, noted author and
outstanding interpreter of immi-
grant trends in this country, in
an article to appear in the forth-
coming issue of The New Pales-
tine, official publication of the
Zionist Organization of America.
Assailing the creation of "par-
alell Jewish and Arab battalions
in Palestine" in place of a Jewish
Army, as a "dodge," Adamic pro-
poses the establishment bf a
Jewish Army of Palestinian and
stateless Sews under. American
auspices and command.
Maintaining that such a fight-
ing force and the Legion idea are
not in conflict, Adamic concludes
that "together this will mean that
the Jewish manpower in the
Middle East is to be used, that
the Jews will finally have their
moral right to fight for their lives,
to die fighting, and thus win the
