This Week's Scriptural Portions:

On the Sabbath of this week, the fifth day of Kislev, the
following Scriptural selections will be read in our syna-
gogues: Pentateuehal portion, Gen. 25:19-28:9; Prophetical
portion, Malachi 1:1-2:7.

The War Chest's Success

The success of the War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit
is one of the most thrilling experiences in the present
crisis. It duplicates the triumphs of our military forces
on our home front and serves as an additional warning to
our enemies that we mean business in our determination
to crush the Axis.

It is in order at this time to say,- to our community that
the efficient manner is which the drive was conducted was
in large measure responsible for its success. The Jewish
workers realized that the esteem in which they had
held the leaders of the Allied Jewish Campaigns of the
past few years was more than jusitfied. Mr. Isidore Sobe-
loff and Miss Esther Prussian demonstrated once again
that they know how to approach a big task, and their
associates in the campaign, who previously collaborated
with them in the Community Fund drives, rightfully feel
that a splendid unity has been cemented among all faiths
' in carrying to success one of the most interesting humani-
tarian drives on record.

Bronislaw Huberman's Concert

The forthcoming appearance in Detroit of Bronislaw
Huberman, outstanding violinist, has double significance.
In the first place, proceeds of this concert, which is
being arranged by the Jewish National Workers' Alliance,
will go towards fulfilling Detroit's quota to the fund for
the Farband Colony to be built on land of the Jewish
National Fund in Palestine.
Of importance also, is the fact that Detroit Jews
will have an opportunity to honor this eminent artist
for the services he has rendered as the organizer of
the Palestine Symphony Orchestra. As a result of his
efforts, Eretz Israel how has one of the finest musical
organizations in the world. He also was responsible for
men like Arturo Toscanni coming to Palestine to act as
guest conductors with this symphony. The Jewish
National Home was thus enriched by the contributions
made to music through the initiative and -as a result of
the able leadership of Bronislaw Huberman,
Detroit Jews will honor themselves by turning out in
large numbers to honor this eminent violinist on Nov. 29.

The Jewish Community Council

When the spokesmen for the Jewish organizations of
Detroit gather this Sunday at the Jewish Commjmity
Center, to participate in the all-day Institute an:f anged by
the Jewish Community Council, it is to be expected that
they will again establish a constructive basis for discus-
sion of problems facing the Jewish people.
We are confident that the tragedy of the Jewish
people will be mitigated in the course of time. The suc-
cessful military operations of the United Nations point to
an early triumph over the Axis. But the complete solution
of the Jewish problems requires understanding of the
issues involved. It calls for community harmony and for
co-operation on the part of all elements in our midst.
Therefore, intelligent discussion is imperative.
It is to be hoped that the plans to be evolved at the
Institute discussions on Sunday will lead to such a whole-
some 'status in Detroit Jewry.

Bnai Brith's Anniversary

Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith represents the second
"oldest Jewish group in our community. Temple Beth El
comes first, having passed its 92nd birthday, and Congre-
gation Shaarey Zedek, whose 80th anniversary will be
observed in December, is third.
Therefore, Pisgah Lodge's history is in reality the
history of the Jewish community of Detroit. Some of the
most illustrious leaders in the city have been affiliated
with this lodge at one time or another.
We extend our heartiest congratulations to Pisgah
Lodge on its celebration of this important anniversary.

10 Commandments

Sulzberger and Zionism

The Ten Commandments pro-
claim the absolute and eternal
distinction between right and
wrong in human conduct; and
Israel's teachers of all times have
indicated their detailed applica-
tion in everyday life.
Thus, they have been unsparing
in condemnation of those who
contravened measures framed
for the good of the population.
Twenty-seven centuries ago the
prophet Amos indignantly de-
nounced cornering the market in
foods, rebuking the rapacious
merchants for their greed, their
dishonesty, their meanness.
A thousand years later, the
Talmud sternly forbade similar
misdeeds, and the medieval rab-
bis after them laid down the rule,
"Anyone who, in defiance of the
law of the land, sells greater
quantities than is allowable, or at
a higher price than is allowable,
suitable corporal punishment may
be inflicted upon such a one,
in addition to appropriate mone-
tary fines."
Jewish participation in this
and other offenses has given rise
to a grave defamation of Judaism
and the Jewish name. It may
make people forget that, in the
present battle for human free-
dom, the Jew is doing his duty on
every battle front and every the-
atre of war, on land and in the
air, on the sea and under the
sea.

Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of the New York
Times, an avowed anti-Zionist, must have been shocked
to learn that the Associated Press had widely circulated
his views on Zionism and the demands for a Jewish, army,
expressed in an address in the Baltimore synagogue of
which another arch anti-Zionist, Dr. Morris Lazaron, is
rabbi. Mr. Sulzberger does not relish publicity on Jewish
matters, and when he becomes the center of such attention
it must be very painful to him.

A Proposal for Unity

The final outcome of the Nov. 3 elections has led
Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg to propose a victory coali-
tion which would proclaim a holiday on political activities
and would cause all to strive for the common aim of win-
ning the war.

Senator Vandenberg's commendable proposal is in-
dicative of the one-mindedness of the American people on
the basic need of the hour. With such principles prevail-
ing, we need have no fears as to the future • of our
democracy.
