Zionist Shortcomings
With all the enthusiasm gen-
erated by the Z.O.A. and Ha-
dassah conventions, the Zionist
constituency owes it to itself and
to its -cause to examine their
position and to ascertain why
there are certain shortcomings.
Why are some people missing
from animal sessions of the or-
ganization'?
What has happened to former
presidents who have suddenly
disappeared from the convention
platform?
Why have the youth move-
ments in Zionism collapsed?

bership is small in numbers.
Masada is practically non-exist-
ent. Junior Hadassah is not as
strong as it has been.
What's wrong? Why are the
Zionist leaders indifferent in this
matter?
Here is something to think
about. The strengthening of the
Zionist youth movement is
something to strive for. The
Zionist leadership is being put
to the test by this problem more
than any other.

There was a lull in the court of
the Roman Emperor. The cou-
tiers, weary of flattering their
monarch, reclined silent and
sullen, gazing with bored eyes
upon the glory of the late after-
noon. Trajan, the emperor, roused
himself from his reverie of self-
contemplation to become con-
scious of the aged Rabbi who
droned into his ear words of wis-
dom and warning.
"What are you saying, old
Rabbi?" asked Trajan, thus draw-
ing the- attention of the court to
himself. "What is this tale you
would have me believe of a god
of mercy and a god of love? Do
you think your god, because he
brought your people out of the
bondage of Egypt, is mightier
than Mars or more powerful than
Jove? If you would have me be-
lieve in His wonder but show me
His sign."
The aged seer looked long into
the face of Trajan and noted the
sneer that played about his lips.
For in all the world the only
god whom this Roman emperor
would - acknowledge. was himself,
whom he set high above all else.
"Most exalted one," said the
Rabbi, "I fear it would be an
impossible task to set before your
eyes the god of my people.
Israel's God is unseen by the eye
of man, and man's ear cannot
hear the might of His voice. But
when He wishes man to know of
His might He speaks with the
voice of thunder. His mercy and
kindness are shown by the sun-
shine and the gentle rain."
"A pretty fancy," laughed the
Emperor, "but of little value to
one who seeks a material form of
god to worship. You cannot ask
man to bow before the wind in
supplication. You cannot hope
for man to kneel to the lightning
in prayer. No, we Romans de-
mand more substantial evidence .
of God's existence."
"Then come," said the Rabbi,
"and I will show you a messenger
of God."
Filled with curiosity, the Em-
peror rose from his couch and
followed the white-haired Rabbi
through the palace halls. Out
through the great arch they went
until they stood upon the balcony
that overlooked the splendid city
of Rome. Above them the azure

sky spread like a canopy over
their heads. The domes of the
city glistened and glowed in the
late afternoon sunshine., for the
sun was still hanging like a
golden ball in the western sky.
"Exalted One," exclaimed the
Rabbi, pointing with a noble ges-
ture toward the sun, "if a mate-
rial god you must have, turn
your eyes, in worship on the sun."
But Trajan lifted his hand
quickly to shield them from the
bright glare.
"But how," he cried, "how can
I gaze upon the sun? I should be
blinded by the light."
"Then think," said the Rabbi,
"that the sun, from whom you
turn away your eyes is but the
messenger of God. How could
you look upon Him when the
brilliance of His creation is too
great for mortal eye to bear?"
The Emperor bowed his head.
"You . are wise, oh Rabbi," he
said. "Your God is a great God
indeed." -
"There is none like Him," re-
plied the Rabbi. "The God of
Israel is one—He is eternal."
