Gruesome Murder

Of Kishineff Chief
Rabbi is Revealed

KUIBYSHEV (JPS) — Grue-
some details of the murder of
Chief Rabbi Zirelson of Kishineff
have been released to the Soviet
press by the Jewish Anti-Fascist
Committee, which based its ac-
count on the reports of Jewish
refugees who arrived in Saratov.
The refugees related that the
Rumanians broke into Rabbi Zir-
elson's home while he was en-
grossed in Talmudic studies and
led him under guard to the place
of execution in the center of the
city. There he was beheaded with
an axe, and his head left to lie
at the foot of the execution block
for several days.
The official reason given for
the execution was that when the
Russians had occupied Bessarabia
Rabbi Zirelson had remained at
his post in Kishineff instead of
proceeding to Rumania, thus in-
dicating that he was pro-Russian.

Polish Jews to Send
Packages to Prison
Camps in Germany

In order to acquaint local or-
ganizations with the work of the
Detroit chapter of the American
Federation of Polish Jews, a
number of speakers will be heard
at numerous meetings during
November. Rabbis and laymen
have volunteered to explain the
position of Polish Jews in vari-
ous war-torn countries. They
will outline for the Jewish organ-
izations the Polish-Jewish Fed-
eration's task of collecting clothes
for refugees in Russia, the pro-
gram of aid for prisoners in Ger
man camps and the movement to
find homes for refugee children
who are coming to this country
from France. The aid of these or-
ganizations will be solicited in
carrying this program into effect.
At a joint meeting of the Polish
Federation, Ezra and representa-
tives of organizations, it was de-
cided to campaign for 400 pack-
ages, at $4.50 a package, to be
sent to Polish prisoners in Ger-
man camps through the Interna-
tional Red Cross. Donations are
being accepted at the office of
the Federation, 9124 Linwood
Ave., TYler 7-9650.

They Died for Freedom!

(Continued from Page 31)

A contributor who makes a slight increase over his .
last year's giving is saying in effect, "I( believe in the War
Chest, but I expect someone else to give 225 % of his last

year's contribution, plus enough to make up my below-
average increase. I accept the War Chest as an idea, but
its success will have to depend on the other fellow."
How do you feel toward the War Chest? Do you
accept it in principle only, or in fact as well? Examine
your own intended pledge, if you are still to make it—or
re examine it, if you already have made it.
Consider the causes at home for our continuing, es-
sential services in the cities and camps for our boys in uni-
form, and all over the world for the civilian victims of war
among our Allies.
See to it that—if at alI. possible your contribution
reflects the need in full. Don't believe in the War Chest,,
but." Believe in it and give to it without reservation.

Jews in America will be very
much interested in the book "Be-
tween Hitler and Mussolini" writ-
ten by Prince Starhemberg of
Austria and published this week
by Harper . . . Staremberg, whom
Mussolini tried to use against
Hitler before the Nazi occupation
of Austria, was not noted for his
friendly feelings for the Jews .
In fact, he admits in his book
that in his younger days he had
"false and foolish theories" about
the Jews .. . All the more im-
portant, therefore, is the conclu-
sion to which he now comes that
"the most dangerous spearhead
against the Austrian defense
front was furnished by anti-
Semitism" . . • While he prefers
not to discuss whether anti-
Semitism in Austria was justi-
fied, Prince Starhemberg estab-
lishes that after the assassination
of Premier Dollfuss by the Nazis
in Vienna, political anti-Semitism
ceased to have any justification
"because Jewish influences in
Austrian politics, if they ever ex-
isted at all, were eliminated .. .
Nevertheless, many good Aus-
trian patriots continued to fall
under the influence of Nazi anti-
Semitic propoganda .

never has there been such real

these groups as now prevails.
Strange that at the recent con-
