LONDON (JTA)—Estimating that "nearly two mil-
lion Jews already have been destroyed in Nazi-occupied
Europe, excluding'those massacred in occupied Russia,"
the Manchester Guardian, one of Britain's leading news-
papers, in an editorial this • week draws the attention of
the United Nations to the process of Jewish extermination

conducted by the Nazis.
Declaring that "the same fate is awaiting 4,500,000 more Jews
in Europe if Hitler remains unchecked," the article demands that
the United Nations issue a special statement to emphasize that
"those responsible for the hideous destruction of the Jews will come
under the same retribution as those guilty of other war crimes."

Anti-Semitic Publications Still Active
NEW YORK (JTA)—More than 10 months after Pearl Harbor,
there still persists in the country propaganda sheets which tend
to sabotage the spirit of the war effort by spreading anti-Jewish
anti-war and even pro-Nazi statements, the New York Herald-
Tribune reports.
"These sheets still exist, circulating the same old hate-lies with
a bit more subtlety and caution. Several of them have been put
out in recent weeks by some of the very persons indicted in July
for issuing anti-American or pro-enemy propaganda," the paper
writes.
Publications named in the article include "Yankee Freemen,"
Court Asher's "X-Ray," Gerald L. K. Smith's "The Cross and the
Flag," "The Broom," of San Diego, Calif., and Charles B. Hudson's
"America in Danger." Now most of them circulate through first-
class mail.

The Week's Best Stories

Ruling on Homeliness
A worried, middle-aged wom-
an visited her rabbi with the
anxious query, "Is it possible un-
der Jewish law for my husband
to get a divorce on the grounds
that I am `meas'? (homely)."
The rabbi stroked his patri-
archal beard and' then called a
member of his household. He
ordered him to bring one of the
books of the Talmud. This pro-
cured, he turned leaf after leaf,
closed the book, and ordered an-
other one be brought to him.
The same performance. Not a
word did he utter to appease
the anxious soul.
"Bring • me the Schulchan
Aruch," the old man said firmly.
This brought to him, he again
began to turn page after page,
and finally, with a sigh of re-
lief, the old m
an took from the
book the thing he had sought—
his misplaced spectacles.
Carefully placing them Upon
his nose, he scrutinized his visi-
tor. Shaking his head, he in-
formed her, "Your husband is
right. You are meas."
