Morris Ginsbergs

Are Honored on
25th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Morris Ginsburg,
leaders in Branch No. 3 of the
Poale Zion, were honored on the
occasion of their 25th wedding
anniversary at a gathering at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin
Laikin of LaSalle Blvd., on Sat-
urday evening.
A sum of money was raised to
inscribe the names of Mr. and
Mrs. Ginsberg in the Golden
Book of the Jewish National
Fund in Jerusalem, and the Gins-
bergs gave an additional gift to

Two Very Good Books for Our
Boys an Girls
There is no longer any excuse
for anyone not knowing the facts
about Jewish history and the
men and women who made our
history.
Many valuable books have
been printed for young and old,
and if they are read ignorance
will disappear.
Two very good books were just
published by Hebrew Publishing
Co., 77 Delancey St., New York,
and they are highly recommend-
ed to all our readers.
Rabbi Abraham Burstein is the
author of "West of the Nile." It
is the story of the life of Saadia
Gaon, the great Rabbi who lived
in Tiberias, then became Gaon
(a term meaning "excellency"
and applied to the intellectual
head of Baylonian Jewry) at
Sura, and later was exiled to
Bagdad. He died a thousand years
ago this year. The illustrations
for this book were drawn by
Howard Simon.
. The story as told by Rabbi
Burstein is most interesting. It
traces the family life of Saadia,
his great learning, his fight
against the Jewish group known
as the Karaites who believed
only in the five Books of Moses .
and rejected the Talmud and the
wisdom of the Talmud. At one
time his life was threatened by
a Turk. But Saadia Gaon's ideals
survived and his name has gone
down as one of the very great
men in Jewish history.
Here is a biography that should
be ready by everyone, and • our
boys and girls will surely be
thankful for the opportunity of
learning the historical facts re-
corded by Rabbi Burstein in
"West of the Nile."
A Jewish Treasure Hunt
The second book we recom-
mend for our childen was also
written by a rabbi. It is a
"Treasure Hunt in Judaism" by
Rabbi Harold P. Smith, with il-
lustrations by A. D. Bernstein.
This treasure book describes
most of the facts that should be-
known about the Jewish re-
ligion. It begins by telling how
the Jewish faith originated and
then explains the Jewish symbols
and holidays: Mezuzah, Tefillin,
Tzitzit, the Sabbath, the Jewish
calendar, Rosh Hashanah, Yom
Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukah, Pur-
im, Passover, Shavuoth, the Bar
Mitzvah ceremony, the dietary
laws.
The facts are interesting and
well written. Children should
read them, and it will do their
parents good to study them.

Discipline Imposed On Members to Unify Mobilization , of
Resources for War; U. S. Decisive Factor in
Jewry, Says Ben Gurion

JERUSALEM (JPS-Palcor)—By a vote of 205 to 2,
the Mapay Jewish Labor Party of Palestine,, at its third
annual conference, abolished all factional lines in a move
to eliminate rising friction within the organization and to
impose discipline upon all party members because of war-
time-conditions.

The action came during voting
on amendments to the constitu-
tion proposed by David ben Gur-
ion, chairman of the Jewish
Agency Executive, who was
chairman of the standing com-
mittee of the Mapay conference
held at the Jewish settlement of
Kfar Vitkin.
Present, Future Program
The need for achieving unity
in the labor movement itself, of
mobilizing all the resources of
Palestine for the war effort and
of formulating a political pro-
gram for present and future
needs dominated the addresses
heard by 500 delegates and hun-
dreds of visitors.
During the principal address of
the sessions Mr. Ben Gurion
urged maximum mobilization for
the fight against Hitler, uninter-
rupted immigration and coloniza-
tion despite all the problems.
The Arab Question
Dealing with the Arab ques-
tion, Mr. Ben Gurion declared
that the labor movement is the

only one exerting an effort to
reach an agreement with the
Arabs. This cannot be achieved,
he added, through reducing our
stature and aspirations.

"United States Jewry," he con-
tinued, "is a decisive factor in
the future of the Jewish people.
There is need to strengthen the
Zionist spirit there, to unify the
Jewish forces and to prepare
American public opinion."
(The Jewish Telegraphic Ag-
ency reports from Jerusalem that
the five-day conference of Mapay
failed to solve the basic prob-
lems of the labor party; that 205
of the 401 delegated had voted
and that a referendum is sched-
uled on the decisions reached).

An Earthworm Is
Just An Annelid—He
Doesn't Know Any Better

An earthworm goes along his way making his
burrows in the earth, content with a few seeds
and a little decaying matter. He has never been
subjected to the benefits of civilization he
wouldn't even recognize a blitz buggy if he saw
one. He doesn't have a doctor, he never has heard
of vaccination or preventive medicine. He has
never had a prescription filled or a tooth pulled.
He works the night shift and likes it. A funny
fellow that earthworm! He doesn't realize he is
always in danger of getting on the wrong end of
a tug of war with a robin or being impaled on a
fish hook.

If an annelid (earthworm) could look at human
beings and .wonder what was wrong what would
he say? Why is it that home sapiens (man)
doesn't take care of himself when he can. Why
doesn't he go to see his doctor at the first sign of
illness, or better yet before he gets sick. Why
doesn't homo get plenty of rest. Why doesn't
homo eat the right kind of food, and eat regularly?
Why doesn't homo realize that wars must be
fought to the bitter end and can be won only by
a strong people.

You are a thinking human being. You know
better than to let your health go. You know that
your doctor can keep you feeling well and work-
ing every day. You know that the prescription that
your doctor writes can be compounded at Sam's
at the most reasonable rates. You know that Sam's
prescriptionists are outstanding in their field, that
all prescription work is rigidly checked. The next
time you are in Sam's look at the labels on the
bottles of the companies supplying Sam's you'll
see only the best: Parke-Davis, Lilly, Squibb, Sharp
& Dohme, Upjohn, Abbott, Merrell, Wyeth, Bur-
roughs-Wellcome, Searle, Merck, Stearns, Ayerst,
Scheiffelin and others. You will realize why Sam's
fills the greatest number of prescriptions in Michigan.
