High tribute was paid to the
heroic courage of three typical
American fighters for democracy
when the Detroit Institute of
Technology recently held a me-
morial service for the first mem-
bers of its alumni to be killed in
the service of their country. One
was a Catholic, another a Protes-
tant, and the third, a Jewish lad.
The Jewish boy, Captain Ru-
bin Iden, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Iden of 1918 Pingree Ave.,
was drowned when his plane was
shot down into the Pacific -some-
where in the Solomon Islands
area. He is the first Jewish boy
from Detroit to be killed in
action.
"Captain Iden represented all
that is best in both Judaism and
Americanism," declared Arthur
E. Johnson, registrar and army
faculty adviser of the D.I.T. "Our
school is very proud to own him
as an alumnus."
Rubin was an outstanding ath-
lete, making a name for himself
as a varsity football player and
boxer at both Northern High
School, of which he was a grad-
uate, and the Detroit Tech. He
reached the semi-finals in the
Golden Gloves tournament in
1937, and took part in the Dia-
mond Belt tourney. He also
coached the D.I.T. boxing team.
Enlisting in 1399, he was trans-

Miles From Home

Detroiters serving in the arm-
ed forces of the U.S., in all parts
of the land and overseas, are
reading The Jewish News and
write us that they welcome it as
"a messenger of good tidings
from home."
Numerous letters have been re-
reived during the past week ex-
pressing gratitude for the paper'S
arrival.
Last week we quoted Capt.
Israel Wiener who wrote from
"somewhere in the southwest
Pacific" that he cherishes every
copy that comes to him—even
though it reaches him a bit late.
This week we received the

service, Norman, a corporal at
Fort Leavenworth, and Isadore, a
private, with the medical corps
at Pine Bluff, Ark. A cousin, Abe
Weinstein, has enlisted in the
Air Corps.

"The Rosh Hashanah issue of
The Jewish News just reached
me from home. It was like a
welcome friend, informing me
of the activities of my Jewish
brethren at home and the world
over and presenting its usual
splendid opinions and fine edi-
torials. You will be interested
to know that it came to me in
the Foreign Service and traveled
a distance of some 3,500 miles.
The Jewish News is a splendid
medium for disseminating the
truth and spreading enlighten-
ment. Here is wishing you con-
tinued success in -the coming
year. To my dear relatives and
friends in Detroit, belated but
sincere good wishes for a New
Year abundant with joy and lov-"
ing kindness."

$27,000,000 is a lot • of money
