GUEST EDITORIAL

Jewish Needs and War Chest

By HENRY WINEMAN
Member of Executive Committees of Jewish Welfare Federation
of Detroit and War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit

As we take our place in the War Chest campaign, we
must recognize one basic fact, that it embraces many
phases of the world problem which will have a direct
effect on our communal thinking. In past campaigns we
have been concerned with the Jewish
problem without pausing to establish its
relationship to the world struggle for
freedom. The War Chest has changed all
that. It has brought us into close affilia-
tion on the communal front with all the
forces that are holding the battlefront
for civilization.
In the heat of the campaign one does
not always find the time to dwell on the
broader aspects of the programs and
needs involved. Our primary concern has Henry Wineman
been the task of raising funds for immediate needs, and
that is as it should be. Yet, in this crucial war year—a year
which may see the turning of the tide for the United Na-
tions—we must not only meet urgent appeals for assist-
ance ; we must examine the fundamental purposes underly-
ing the programs of our beneficiary agencies in the light
of their relationship to the future of the Jewish people*
in all parts of the world.
At this late date it is not necessary to re-emphasize
that the Jews were the first casualties in Hitler's war on
democracy. Nor is it necessary to repeat that wherever a
Jew is helped to survive Nazi oppression the forces of
freedom are strengthened. It certainly is not necessary to
demonstrate that our campaign is an integral part of the
prosecution of the war. That has been made obvious in a
dramatic manner by the establig}, Tna-, t of the War Chest,

Jewish Campaign Day in the great drive for $5,800,000.
