Replacing numerous separate appeals for social ser-
vice, educational and other institutions in Palestine, the
American Fund for Palestinian Institutions has been es-
tablished, with offices at 60 Beaver St., New York.
Edward A. Norman, prominent New York leader,
president of the combined fund, has announced that $250,-
000 will be asked this year of

American Jews for allocation to
15 Palestinian agencies.
Detroiters on National Council
Among the national leaders
who have endorsed the American
Fund for Palestinian Institutions
are Fred M. Butzel and Abraham
Srere of Detroit.
At. a recent meeting of the na-
tional council, appointment of 43
members of the national council
was ratified. They include Law-
rence W. Crohn, member of the
executive committee, and Philip
Slomovitz.
. In his annual presidential re-
port, Mr. Norman announced that
the following Palestinian institu-
tions are being included in the
combined fund:
Organizations to Benefit
Hebrew Institute of Technol-
ogy, Haifa; Palestine Symphony
Orchestra, Hechalutz of America,
Hebrew Teachers' College, Jeru-
salem; Mikveh Israel Agricultur-
al School, Haifa Nautical School,
Julian W. Mack School and Work
Shops, Jerusalem; Haifa Techni-
cal High School, Palestine He-
brew Culture Fund (Keren Hat-
arbut), Habimah Theater, Trade
School for Yemenite Gir5s, Reho-
both; American Economic Com-
mittee for Palestine, Institute' for
Physical Education, Haifa; Pales-
tine Conservatory of Music in
Jerusalem, Ohel, the Workers'
Theater.
Nearly one hundred' welfare
funds throughout the country al-
ready have included the Ameri-
can Fund for Palestinian Institu-

tions in their quotas. During the
last year, $50,000 has been allo-
cated to the subsidiary institu-
tions.
Palestinian Board
Besides the American board of
directors representing a cross-
current opinion of representative
leaders, there is a Palestinian ad-
visory board which guides the
activities of the united fund-rais-
ing effort.
Mr. Norman's report indicates
that a field worker, Itzhak Nor-
man of Palestine, who is not re-
lated to him, visited 104 com-
munities in 21 states during a
seven-month period and enlisted
the aid of leaders in those cities.
Mr. Norman visited Detroit dur-
ing his tour.
Will Establish 'Harmony
Campaigns for the United Jew-
ish Appeal will be aided rather
than hindered through the Amer-
ican Fund for PalePtinian Institu-
tions, Mr. Norman's report em-
phasizes. He points to the elimin-
ation of separate drives and the
establishment of harmony in
fund-raising as being beneficial ,
to the entire community of Amer-
ican - Jews. He added: "For the
benefit of Palestine as a whole,
rnd . for America as well, the
American institutions will be the
gainers (through the united fund-
raising effort), and it is necessary
that all leaders give us their full
cooperation by discouraging solic-
itation from independent
appeals."

Interesting Description

of Holiday Services

The influences of the home
and the school are making them-
selves felt very strongly among
Jews in the armed forces of the
U. C.
Evidence of the wholesome ef-
fects left upon those who had any
sort of Jewish
education is to
be found in let-
ters rec eived

ipation in relig-

Capt. Wiener lains.
A most interesting letter came
this week from Capt. Israel Wie-
ner who is now with the U. S..
Army 'somewhere in the south-
west Pacific. For lack of a chap-
lain, Dr. Wiener, who has had a
good Hebrew education—he was
graduated from the United He-
brew Schools—was called upon
to conduct High Holy Day ser-
vices. So effective were these
services, that plans are already
being made to have Passover ser-
vices for this division.
Fail to Secure Shofar
Contacting the chief chaplain,
Dr. Wiener secured a place for
Holyday worship. The Christian
minister was most cooperative.
He refused to permit the Jewish
men to buy wine for the Kiddush
and insisted on presenting them
with a bottle as his gift. He even
made an effort—without success
—to secure a Shofar.
Dr. Wiener writes that the
prayer book he brought along

with him was_. the only one avail-
able for the services. He writes:
"The chief chaplain gave me
eight copies of the Jewish Holy
Scriptures printed by the Jew-
ish Welfare Board from the Jew-
ish Publication Society's English
translation of the Bible. I was
Reader, Cantor and Rabbi—all in
one. I had to read much of the
text myself and then had it re-
peated word for word because
of the availability of only one
prayer book. The men come
from all parts of the United
States. It was a mixed congre-
gation of Reform, Orthodox and.
Conservatiire Jews. It was an ex-
perience that I shall long re-
member."
Seeks Material for Passover
In time for Passover, Dr. Wie-
ner writes, the chief chaplain
hopes to secure necessary prayer
books and other material to en-
able the Jews to observe the Fes-
tival of Freedom.
An interesting note in Dr.
Wiener's letter is the following
"I believe we can have weekly
services, with good attendance.
In spite of a lack of Jewish edu-
cation, and their unfamiliarity
with Jewish religious services,
our Jewish men all seem to have
the spirit of our religion in them.
It is really inspiring."
Dr. Wiener writes that he re-
ceived The Jewish News "far out
in the southwest Pacific," and al-
though it comes six weeks late
he cherishes every copy. -
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J.
Wiener, Dr. Wiener was married
three years ago to Ann Daitch.
Mrs. Wiener is a teacher in the
Detroit public schools. Dr. Wie-
ner was for four years president
of the Jewish National Fund
Council of Detroit and has been
active in Jewish National Fund
work since his student days 'in
the United Hebrew Schools. His
present address is: Capt. Israel
