EW1SH NEWS

which are still being made, will carry our agencies until
May 31, 1943 and the full year's inclusion of our agencies
in the War Chest will protect the Jewish community against
the day when the War Chest dissolves.

FIGURING YOUR A; J. C. SHARE

Obviously, then, your first responsibility, as a matter of
honor and self-respect, is to include as the first part of
your War Chest pledge, an amount at least equal to your
full year's gift to the Allied Jewish Campaign last year.
This is necessary in the special interests of our own Jewish
services and will cover your Allied Jewish Campaign giving
six months beyond the next calendar year, a tremendous
aid to us on that future day when we shall once more be
facing a campaign of our own.

HOW ABOUT PAYMENTS?

If you already have paid your 1942 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign pledge in full, you may properly raise the question
as to whether you are expected to pay your 1943 War
Chest pledge within the same calendar year.
This is a good question—and the answer is: No!—un-
less for tax purposes or other reasons you prefer to do so.
If you still are paying on your 1942 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign pledge, you may ask whether you are expected to
pay your 1943 War Chest pledge before completing pay-
ment on your outstanding obligation.
No—you are not being called on at this time to pay the
Allied Jewish Campaign part of your 1943 War Chest pledge.

BE FAIR TO THE. OTHER CAUSES

The War Chest pledge includes gifts to the Allied Jewish
Campaign and to ten other causes. If the A. J. C. were
campaigning independently, you would now be pledging
and paying to the Community Fund, the U. S. O. and to the
Russian, Chinese, and other war relief appeals. Do exactly
that on your payments, making sure, however, that as
far as pledges are concerned you add in a full year's amount
for the Allied Jewish Campaign.
As to payments on that part of the pledge which normally
would be for the Allied Jewish Campaign, you may delay
payments until after January 1, 1943, beginning such
payments, if you find it more convenient, in January, Feb..
ruary, March, April or even May or June.

BUT MAKE YOUR FULL PLEDGE NOW

This will be quite acceptable to the War Chest, if your
pledge to the War Chest covers in full your planned giving

for all of the causes, including the amount you would
have pledged in May, 1943, if there were an independent
Allied Jewish Campaign at that time.
It will be perfectly in order for your monthly or quarterly
balances on the Allied Jewish Campaign part of your War
Chest pledge for 1943 to extend into 1944, if you find
such an arrangement necessary.

HOW WE CAN OPERATE

Please bear in mind that in view of the fact that the money

already paid in on 1942 pledges to the Allied Jewish

Campaign, plus the money that will continue to be paid
in during the coming months by those who have balances

outstanding, will provide for the operation of our Jewish

agencies until May 31, 1943.

Since this is so, the Allied Jewish Campaign will not

require any allocations from the War Chest before next

June, so that if you need to delay paying the Allied Jewish

Campaign part of your 1943 pledge for a few months, it

will not inconvenience either the War Chest or the Allied

Jewish Campaign.

YOUR SHARE OF THE INCREASE

Having included your full share for the Allied jeck ish

Campaign, the rest of your calculation is fairly easy.

Please remember that above and beyond the Allied

Jewish Campaign share, the War Chest must raise approxi-

mately $5,000,000 as compared with $2,500,000 raised

by the Community Fund last year.

This means that if you pledge your Allied Jewish Cam ,

paign amount, plus twice your Community Fund gift, you

will arrive at a rough approximation of what might be

regarded as a fair average gift.

DO A LITTLE BETTER

If you add in the equivalent of the amount you gave to the
U. S. O., the Russian and Chinese War Reliefs, etc., you
will be giving a little above average—a level you will wish
to attain, especially if you take into account that here and
there, because of deaths, removals, business reverses, or
other reasons, some former contributors may not be able
to hold up their share of the load.
If you have had a comparatively fortunate year—and
compared to our people in other parts of the world,—who
hasn't had a fortunate year?—you will use this formula
as a guide to establish minimum giving.
You will not want to stop there if you can do better.

A THREE-FOLD CONTRIBUTION

You will wish to show that sending our sons and brothers
and husbands to war beside the loved ones of our neighbors
is more than an act of training camp and battlefield unity:
The War Chest is a symbol of solidarity and Americanism
which we are proud to endorse—and to support, for
help at home, to serve our boys in uniform and to aid our
suffering Allies.
The Allied Jewish Campaign contributors have never

let technical obstacles stand in their way. Taking care of

our own has never meant taking care only of our own:
We shall find a convenient way to make our payments ;
we shall find a way to give more generously than ever

to meet a greater challenge.

We shall do our utmost—because together—we

can win/
