In 1917 he was appointed secre- tary of the Palestine Committee by the British government, and he was attached to the Palestine section of the Middle Eastern delegation at the peace confer- ence following the First World War. Promoted British Trade In 1940, he was delegated by the British government to set up an organization - in the United States for the expansion of Brit- ish exports to this country. One of England's leading mer- chants and industrialists, Mr. Sieff, together with his brother- in-law, Simon Marks, developed the Marks and Spencer chain stores, operating 236 department stores. Mr. Sieff is vice-president and managing director of these stores, which last year initiated a communal feeding plan in Lon- don.
