GUEST EDITORIAL

The War Chest and the
United Jewish Appeal

By IRVING W. BLUMBERG

Co-Chairman, Industrial and Commercial Division of the
War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit

'it

The War Chest established in our community
is the best evidence that the heart of America
has been moved to action on a united and gener-
ous basis for the rescue and reconstruction of the
victims of Hitlerism and for the support of those
humanitarian ideals for which our sons and broth-
ers and the sons and brothers of our fellow men
and neighbors are fighting today.
The Jews were the first victims of Nazi
attack. They sounded the warning to the entire
world of the full extent of the
menace of Hitlerism for all man-
kind. They have survived the con-
centration camp, the ghetto, the
cruel and ruthless tortures and
humiliation of Nazi oppression
with the help of American Jews
responding to their needs through
the United Jewish Appeal for Ref-
Mr. Blumberg ugees, Overseas Needs and Pales-
estine. A bitter and crucial winter confronts mil-
lions of our people. The Jews in Europe face in-
describable privations from cold and hunger and
disease. The Jews of Palestine face the threat
of Nazi invasion and the need for the fullest mob-
ilization of their economic and military strength
for the democratic struggle. The refugees in the
United States require immediate aid in retraining
and adjustment so that they may make their con-
tribution to our nation's war effort.
