The Escapists
The dawn of a new era after
the war will bring with it serious
challenges. They are already at
our doorsteps.
Jacob Fishman of the Jewish
Morning Journal, in his justified
concern over the status of Zion-
ism in this country, believes that
a firm stand by the official or-
ganizations can prevent possible
interference with Jewish aspira-
tions at the hands of those who
fear Jewish national indepen-
dence in Palestine.
There are others who are fear-
ful lest appeasements in other
fields will make American Jews
impotent in dealing with the is-
sues that will confront us soon.
In the main, our people who
are constantly compromising their
positions are not appeasers at
all; they are escapists. They are
frightened by their Jewish posi-
tions (Rabbi Lazaron, Judge
Frank and other like them may
be included in this category).
They are scared lest the Kip-
lingers and their views on per-
centage norms for Jews should
dominate the scene.
A Zionist Issue
In the Zionist ranks, there
isn't much room for escapism.
The issues are boiled down to a
few fundamentals, and a Zionist
convention like the forthcoming
one could very easily turn out to
be a very dull affair.
But Dr. Judah L. Magnes may
save the situation. His new
"Yichud" movement should oc-
cupy a major portion of the
convention's attention.
There is ground for consider-
able speculation relative to the
"Yichud." Since the Z.O.A. is to
meet jointly with Hadassah, it
will be interesting to know how
Hada.s.--salx-will react to Miss Hen-
rietta Szold's endorsement of Dr.
Magnes' defeatist proposals.
The Jew as Hair-Shirt
The escapists who are the bone
of contention in Jewish life to-
day are concerned that no one
should charge them with throw-
ing monkey-wrenches into exist-
ing machineries
Some in England, for instance,
were frightened by the following

Word received this week by
Mrs. William Klafer of Oakman
Blvd. from her brother, Corp.
Sol Collins, provided her with
the thrilling satisfaction that
there is a law of

ers to Jewish
causes.
Mrs. Klafer
has been active
for years in the
ranks of the
Ladies' Auxilia-
ry of the Jewish
National Fund,
but has not Corp. Collins
herself been privileged to see
Palestine in the process of re-
demption by Jews. When her
brother's letter informed her that
he was "somewhere in Palestine"
with American troops. she there-
fore had the feeling that he has
been blessed as emissary to wit-
ness what is transpiring in the
Jewish National Home.
Corp. Collins is the son of the
late Meyer and Sarah Collins,
who were well known in De-
troit. He was graduated from
Central High School and at the
time of his induction in service
seven months ago studied art at
Wayne University. He was re-
cently raised to the rank of
Corporal.
Besides Mrs. Klafer, Corp. Col-
lins has five other sisters and
three brothers. They are: Mrs.
Paul Landesman of New York
and Mrs. Arthur Brown of Chi-
cago; Mesdames Gus Jacobs, Jack
Rubin and Irving Saffer; Dr.
Allan Collins, Louis J. and David
Collins, all of Detroit.

War is a serious business. It
makes you think deeply. And
the boys in the American fighting
services, especially it seems, the
Jewish boys, have thought it out
and know very definitely what
they are fighting for.

The Bill of Rights
`More than a hundred and fifty
years ago this country was
blessed with a document of peace
and happiness. Today we must
decide.if we still cherish it, if it
is worth the loss of countless
lives and numerous sufferings?
Our answer has been mighty,
for we are more than prepared
for a foe who ignorantly believes
he can conquer us. We see how
individuals in totalitarian coun-
tries are being deprived of all
things a civilized person right-
fully deserves. Often you can
hear them cry out, "Almighty
God, You bid me to bury my
sorrows and cease over my bur-
dens to rave, but where can I
find on this planet as vast as
my sorrows a grave?" God's an-
swer is—AMERICA! The land

are they to be concerned over

Not
The old story of the little boy eating green
apples and getting a stomach-ache is known
to us all. We have all laughed at pictures
of the boy doubled up with cramps and pain.
We laughed again when we pictured the little
fellow gagging on a huge dose of castor oiL
Yes, we said, that reminded as of our own
childhood and the difficulties our youthful
indiscretions got us into.
But the part of the picture we don't re-
member is when the boy is doubled up with
cramps and pain NOT from green apples.
The pain and cramps the huge gagging
doses of castor oil didn't relieve could have
been very serious. More than one ease of
ruptured appendix has been caused by tak-
ing a laxative for stomach cramps. The
danger has become so great that recent drug
laws have forced manufacturers of laxatives
to print a warning of danger in taking lax-
atives for abdominal pains, right on the label
of the medicine.
With the news more and more serious
every day, this country is going to need
every one of us—literally. We may be called
on soon to give up our own little private
lives and put every ounce of strength into
doing some Job for Uncle Sam. Year health
is mighty important to your country now.
There is no time for unnecessary sickness.
See your doctor for your aches and pains.
No matter what comes, we at Sam's will 'be
ready to compound your doctor's prescription

gredients; we shall make the prices the most
reasonable anywhere.
