ACCORDING TO BOOKS
There's a contest between Prof.
Joseph Klausner of the Hebrew
University and Sholem Asch as
to which will get his book on
Paul to the public first. Klaus-
ncr's "From Jesus to Paul" is
promised by Macmillan's soon.
Klausner's previous "Jesus of
Nazareth" was followed by
Asch's "The Nazarene". Maybe
all that Klausner needs to be-
come a best seller is Maurice
Samuel as translator.
WIDE CIRCULATION
The Saturday Evening Post
takes pride in the fact that Harry
Scherman's "Invisible Green-
backs" has had a greater circu-
lation than any magazine piece
of the decade. First appearing in
the Post, it was reprinted in
Reader's Digest, the Post break-
ing its precedent against releas-
ing excerpts to the Digest at the
special request of the Treasury
Dept. The Post figures would
lead you to believe that 50,000,-
000 Americans will eventually see
this article explaining inflation
and the need for buying War
Bonds. Morgenthau's love for the
head of the Book-of-the-Month
Club must be of recent vintage,
though. A few years ago Scher-
man wrote "The Promises Men
Live By," which was the most
devastating attack on the Treas-
ury Department ever to appear
from a respectable publisher.
Scherman was mad that gold was
repudiated. He's still mad—and'
that's why he writes so plausibly
and vividly.
ATTENTION, KIPLINGER
Your book, "Washington Is
Like That", hinted there were
too many Jews in government, al-
though you tried to sound liberal
by saying 4 per cent was not too
much . . . You ought to go
through the list of appointments
being made by all the war
agencies in Washington to see
how really few Jews are given
any posts of importance ... 0. K.,
so Max F. Cohn, president of
Sunset Feed Co. of Buffalo, feed
and grain specialist who ,served
in the U. S. army overseas in the
last war, was named assistant to
Charles Kenney, acting head of
the Feed and Grain Unit, OPA .
and Burton E. Oppenheim, shirt
and pajama manufacturer of Bal-
timore, who came to OPA in 1941,
is now assistant to J. K. Gal-
braith, deputy administrator in
charge of prices . . . And after
you've shouted hurrah at that,
what have you got? . . . Look at
the long list of people who at-
tended the meeting to co-ordi-
nate the Office of War Informa-
tion and the Inter-Allied Inform-
ation Committee. There wasn't a
single Jew at that meeting, either
for the U. S. or for any of the
United Nations ... Nobody's kick-
ing, if that's how the talent is
distributed, but at least the can-
ard that Jews are getting choice
plums in Washington ought not
to be passed on by allegedly re-
sponsible journalists.

THE JEWISH FRONT
"I am 100 per cent in accord
with the principles of your or-
ganization and sincerely trust
that you will be able, through
the hard work and good organ-
ization you are putting into this
fight, to bring about the speedy
accomplishment of your objec-
tives". . . This, is a quotation
from a letter by Donald M. Nel-
son, Chairman of the War Pro-
duction Board, to Pierre van
Paassen, Chairman of the Com-
mittee for a Jewish Army.
Yeshiva College's Scripta Ma-
thematica had just put out a
second edition of Robert E. Mor-
itz's pamphlet "On the Beauty of
Geometrical Forms" ... Just out,
too, is another Scripta pamphlet
entitled "Cavalieri, Limits and

fellows was shot accidentally,
and on the way to the hospital,
he asked where they were
taking him. He replied, "We
are taking you to the morgue."
The fellow said, "There is some
mistake, I'm not dead." The other
said, "Lie down; do you want to
make a fool out of the doctor?"—
