The Fourth Commandment

SABBATH Observance Movementin Detroit,
i initiated
nitiated more than a year ago by Michigan

Synagogue Conference, has received nationwid0
notice and is being emulated in Boston, Philadelphia
and other cities. There has been a general re-awaken-

ing in American Jewry to the need for organized effort
in behalf of Sh'miras Shabbos, manifested at the SAB-
BATH CONGRESS convened by the Mizrachi Organ-

ization of America last February in New York. Th6
Detroit Jewish Women's League for Sabbath Observ-

ance was formed to implement the local program. It

aims :

1. To educate the Jewish community

to a greater consciousness of the import-

placed upon the plea, "DON'T SHOP ON SHABBOS,"
and upon the training of Jewish consumers to get their
orders from the baker and grocer Friday mornings.
Programs and talks on the significance of the Sabbath
were presented at special functions, before meetings
of Women's organizations and on the radio. Literature
was circulated, homes canvassed, and close to 5,000
pledges were secured from Detroit Jewish women who
subscribe to this program. Conferences were held with
bakers' and grocers' employers and employees and
support was given to shops closed on Saturdays. 'A ma-
jority of the Jewish owned bakeries in the city have
been closed on the Sabbath since July, 1941.

Every Jewish woman in Detroit is eligible for mem-
bership in the League. If you desire to join the organ-
ization, telephone TO. 8-5489 or mail the Coupon.
