By Rabbi Gustav Gottheil
To Thee we give ourselves today,
Forgetful of the world outside:
We tarry in Thy house, 0 Lord,
From eventide to eventide.

From Thy all-searching,
righteous eye
Our deepest heart can nothing
hide;
It crieth up to Thee for peace
From eventide to eventide.

Who could endure, should'st
Thou, 0 God,
/As we deserve, forever
We therefore seek Thy
pardoning grace
From eventide to eventide.

How Shall We Atone?
On the Day of Atonement the
people of Israel read in addition
to a passage from the Pentateuch
a passage from the Prophetical
Books of the Bible. For this most
sacred day in the year the Rabbis
selected a chapter from the Book
of Isaiah which to them and to
us teaches the highest means of
atonement. The chapter reads in
part as follows:
"Is such the fast that I have
chosen?
The day for a man to afflict
his soul?
Is it to bow down his head
as a bulrush,
And to spread sackcloth and
ashes under him?
Wilt thou call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to
the Lord?

Is not this the fast that I
have chosen?
To loose the fetters of
wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to let the oppressed
go free,
And that ye break every yoke?
Is it not to deal thy bread
to the hungry,
And that thou bring the poor
that are cast out to
thy house?

He resolved to get
even.
Accordingly, he wrapped a
heavy brick in fancy paper and
sent it to Saltzman—collect. The
latter gladly paid the charges,
expecting the parcel to contain
a handsome present from his old
friend.
But what was his dismay to
find the brick with this card at-
tached to it: "The news about
your well-being made me so
very happy that this heavy stone
was at once lifted from my
heart."

When thou seest the naked, that
thou cover him,
And that thou hide not thyself
from thine own flesh?

Then shall thy light break forth
as the morning,
And thy healing shall spring
forth speedily;
And thy righteousness shall go
before thee,
The glory of the Lord shall be
thy rear guard."

The Prophet's message is clear.
The only way we can atone for
our sins is to establish in our life
the ideals of social justice.
