to co-operate. Frankly, we believe
that there will be acceptance of
the major principles in Zionism
and also in the American Jew-
ish Congress—because of the re-
alization of Palestine's contribu-
tion to the straightening of the
backs of the Jew as well as the
appreciation of the necessity for
occasional straight - from - the -

SPECULATION AND FACT

(Continued from Page 5)

like speculation. But it is also
fact based on historical experi-
ence. We have had crises before
and often we have emerged
stronger out of conflict.
For American Jews the pres-
ent time is a challenge to do
something creative. It has been

said that we are the only re-
maining community of value in
the world, and that as a result
of what has happened to Europ-
ean Jewry we shall be called
upon to carry the torch for world
Jewry. Those who make such
prophecies may be fooled. Euro-
pean Jews are today being steeled
to a different type of action. They
are being trained in the under-
ground movements and they may

emerge as challengers rather than
remain the challenged. Therefore,
after the war American Jews may
find it necessary to prove that
they deserve the privileges of
leadership in a time when the
rest of the world was in ruins.
Perhaps that will be the time
to produce real leaders. That
time is approaching fast. When
it comes, we feel that American
Jews will not be found wanting.

Will these difficulties be over-
come? This is certain; when this
problem is solved, our main is-
sue of divisiveness will be com-
pletely eliminated. Other issues
will arise, but the bone of con-
tention will be removed. The ad-
ditional question to be asked is

and insulting articles in nation-
al magazines—who will not be
trustworthy. We doubt whether
their kind will ever want to be
an active part of Jewish life.
These men desire dissolution, and
they will not gain recognition for
attitudes that spell death and dis-
appearance for a cultural group.
The leaders will have to he of
different mettle.
THE ETHICAL CODE
I am reminded of an interest-
ing episode in a Michigan court •
Two Jewish lawyi'rs were in-
volved in a case affecting an im-
portant trust company. The iurist
sitting in the case was Judge
Harry B. Keidan of Detroit. One
of the lawyers launched an at-
tack on the bankers. The judge
listened. Then he gave a lecture
on ethics, on judicial tempera-
ment, on the necessity for prov-
ing charges. This wise judge.
who is steeped in Jewish knowl-
edge and is better versed in Bib-
lical lore than many a rabbi (we
heard him chant Lamentations
and read the Book of Esther with
remarkable fluency) knew the
lesson for a man who had over-
stepped the bounds of propriety,
without insulting him.
After court session, several non-
Jews were overheard discussing
the judge's actions. One of them
remarked: "Jews are seemirwly
worried about the Coughlins. But
the Keidans are a good weapon.
They offset most of the damage
with their pronhetitc vision and
their sense of justice."
There are many American Jews
In this category. They have gone
to our modern Hebrew schools
and have drawn upon Jewish
knowledge. They have made
friends among the non-Jews in
schools. on the diamond and grid-
iron. and•they know what they
stand for. One must have con-
fidence in the new American Jew.
THE ONE OBSTACLE
A single serious obstacle will
have to be taken into considera-
tion. Zionism, still misunderstood,
still a dividing element, is being
made too much of as an issue in
the division of resnonsihility in
American-Jewish life. There is
an element in our midst that
efuses to compromise, let alone
agree on a co-operative program.
And the bitterness centering
around American Jewish Con-
gress serves to aggravate the
issue.

Read those words again and again. You've sung them a Thousand
times—perhaps too automatically. unthinkingly. But is their meaning
alive in your heart today? Today it is still the home of brave young
millions of men who have reached around the world in the war
which can only end in making every man's land a free land! Dedicate
yourself on this New Year to do all you can in every way to
bring the Victory and the Peace to our land and to the land of all
men of good-will!
