A Prayer for Palestine

By SHOLEM ASCH
Editor's Note: Moved by war threats to Palestine, Sholem Asch,
the eminent novelist, author of "The Nazarene" and a score of
other best sellers, turned aside from his normal literary work
and wrote a prose-poem prayer for the Jewish National Home in
the Yiddisher Kamfer, organ of the Poale Zion. The following is a
translation of the prayer.
SHOLEM ASCH
"Lord, have compassion on Zion. It shall not be that the
feet which have trod upon Thy creatures like maggots, the feet
which are slimy with the blood of millions of Thy faithful, shall
tread upon Thy holy earth.
"See, Satan has encompassed the earth. He has poured out
upon it a full measure of hate. He has enslaved every head. He
has pierced every heart. He has enohained every limb. Now he
stretches forth with his sharp claws and draws ever closer
to the Holy Land. One can already hear the roar of his iron
wagons. The shadows of his guns already fall athwart the holy
walls. His firsts hammer at the very gates. And Thou—Thou keep-
est silent, Holy One of Israel?
"It just cannot be that Thou wouldst permit the mother to
perish with the last hope in our hearts—but Zion must remain!
barbed-wire, electrically charged barriers where Thy faithful are
imprisoned, there arises anguished plea—the last roar of fallen
trees, the last confessional cry before death. See, 0 Lord, we
prish with the last hope in our hearts—but Zion must remain!
There must continue the last remnant of Israel, which has saved it-
self behind Thy holy walls.
"Enduring, 0 God, is Thy patience. Holy One of Israel, our
souls pant for Thy salvation. And if it should be ordained for
us to do down in a torrent of blood, pulverized between Hitler's
millstones of death: Give us a sign, give us a token, that the
children, the children alone will be taken and that Thou wilist
safeguard the mother! Surely Thou willst not defy Thine own law.
Why then host Thou given Thy word, Thy light and Thy consola-
tion--of the Holy Land, of Zion—to a world in turmoil? Have pity
upon Zion; spare her from the shame of bowing to Satan. Renew
Thy miracle as in the days of Hezekiah and let the words of Thy
prophecy be fulfiilled: 'Because Thy rage against me and Thy
tumult is come up into mine years, therefore will I put my hook
in Thy nose and my bridle in Thy lip and I will turn Thee back
by the way by which Thou comest."
