Paths of Jewish Tradition

A Proclamation on the Occasion of the 16th
Annual Education Month of the Detroit
Hebrew Schools of Detroit, Tishri 5703

By RABBI MORRIS ADLER
Chairman of Education Month Committee

According to an ancient tradition three great sons of
Israel were born on Rosh Hashanah—Isaac to Sarah, Joseph
to Rachel, Samuel to Hannah. The selection from the Torah
read on the first day of the holiday deals with the birth of
Isaac and the prophetic portion deals with the birth of Sam-
uel. the prophet. This is the symbolic way of our tradition
to indicate the pre-eminence which it ascribes to the child.
The child is the key to the future and the preservation of a
people's spirit and culture depends upon its proper trans-
mission to the coming generation. All our institutions, agencies
and movements which have for their purpose the perpetua-
tion of our people, will not avail us if our children sever their.
connections with their people. Our ancestors have profoundly
understood this truth and have not relaxed in the training
of their children even during severe and stormy periods.
Thus, the very first of the festivals of the year is associated
with the problem of rearing our children.
It is therefore most appropriate that the month of
Tishri which opens the New Year be set aside as Jewish
Education Month. For the 16th consecutive year, the United
Hebrew Schools of our community are concentrating during
this month upon bringing the message of Jewish education to
larger numbers of our people. The tradition of Israel assumes
added significance in our day, for it is one of the greatest
factors in the war of ideals in which mankind is engaged.
Israel's heritage includes in a unique form the emphasis
upon the value of freedom, human personality and humani-
tarian sympathies which we are fighting to preserve.
We pray for a victory. To live with any other thought
would be to invite madness. We look to the victory as paving
the way for a freer and better world. In such a world a new
opportunity will be given to the Jewish people to build a
community of dignity and worth. The demoralized and beaten
Jewish centers in the 014 World will reauire a long time for
reenneration. We are the sole community in the Diaspora
wfiich will still have the Possibilities of developing leader-
ship and moral strength. The fine Jewish historian. Philip
Guedella, in his "Footnote on Greatness." describes success in
history as the result of a compound of man with moment.
He adds, "The man without the moment is as futile as the
morn^nt without the man is pathetic, an empty pause
in history." We pray that this war will end in the
de!isive triurnnh of the democratic forces. Its successful
comnletion will provide us with the moment, with the
opportunity. We must provide the men who will avail
Ives of the moment and help in the creation of a
- themselves
Jewish life that will embody all the sacred and priceless
elements of our tradition. This can be done only through an
intensive system of Jewish education. The United Hebrew
School offers to our young the opportunity for training under
the supervision of modern pedagogues who utilize the most
anproved methods of instruction. We hope that the call of the
united Hebrew Schools will fall upon interested and ap-
preciative ears and the observance of Jewish Education Month
will lead to an intensified awareness of the prime importance
of instructing our young.
