On the Threshold of 5703

Hope and faith are the guiding symbols of the New
Year 5703 which we now welcome.
Few, if any, will have any regrets that 5702 is coming
to a close. It was a year full of sorrow. Every hour of
the year that is coming to a close was marked by bloodshed
and suffering, and not a single day during the last twelve
months was devoid of some reminder that a pack of beasts
has plunged the world into darkness and misery.
As we greet the coming of 5703 we have no illusions
about the future. It will be a grim and serious year. It
will be a year full of challenges and tribulations.
But it also will be a year that will lead us closer to
victory. It can not be otherwise, unless the lights are to
be extinguished forever.
There are many threats to the Jewish position. Pales-
tine is facing the danger of invasion. Jews in Nazi-occu-
pied countries share enslavement with the rest of the
populations, suffering the added indignities that are meted
out to–Jews. In the ghettos our people are being driven
to suicide.
Nevertheless, there is a ray of hope on the horizon.
The Stars and Stripes are fluttering in every accessible
free port and from planes that cover the globe. The United
Nations are more firmly resolved- not to permit those who
preach enslavement to gain ground. The conquered na-
tions are slowly but surely expressing themselves, in spite
of the terrible punishments facing those who dare to rebel
against the Nazi terror.
The advent of 5703 has great significances. It calls
for retention of courage and demands- that those who
have learned to realize the distressing effects of the last
year shall carry on the fight for a better future with
greater zeal in the months to come.
May the New Year see the end of tyranny and the
beginning of the days of peace and justice about which
mankind has been dreaming during the years of darkness
and the rule of Nazism.
We wish for mankind and for Israel a year of con-
tentment and peace of mind, the beginning of an era en-
visioned by the Prophet, when "nation upon nation shall
not make war any more."
A Happy 5703 to all!

Yes, It IS Raining Stars

A columnist for "Volk en Staat," Nazi-controlled
'Antwerp newspaper, wrote in that newspaper's issue of
June 25: "You see stars everywhere. On the train from
Antwerp to Brussels I saw so many stars that I thought I
was on a train to Jerusalem. We may well ask what sort of
business these streamlined sons of Judas are doing in the
capital. Where, for instance, does this poor old bearded
Jew, a real dirty ghetto type, get the money to travel?
There is every reason to examine the action of these Jews.
Measures should be taken to reserve a carriage for them ;
it is not pleasant for our compatriots to be forced to sit
next to a streamlined Jew or surrounded by dirty parcels."
"News From Belgium," the organ of the Belgian
Information Center in New York, explains that this is an
attempt at ridicule by the Nazi-controlled newspapers in
Belgium who are irked by the lack of anti-Semitism among
the people of Belgium. Motivated by the same spirit of
irritation, another pro-Nazi Belgian newspaper, "Le Payd
Reel," used such comments as "It is raining stars," "The
stars don't shine from above, they walk the streets," "The
stars disappear in the evening—a strange phenomenon."
The reason for such irksomeness is obvious. The In-
dependent Jewish Press Service reports, for instance, that
the Mayor of Antwerp is being smeared by the pro-Nazi
press because he allows Jews to use—free of charge—
rooms in municipal institutions for Jewish studies and as
substitutes for Jewish schools. Christians are reported
wearing the Star of David as a symbol of kinship with
Jews in the present crisis, thus increasing the number of
stars which DO continue to rain, as the Nazis say.
In reality, out of the Nazis attempt at ridicule one

undercurrent of revolt in Belgium—and in other nazi-

ruled countries as well—which expresses itself in sym-
pathy for the Jews. The Star of David shines—the Nazis
say it "rains." It will continue to be visible, not only during
the day but also at night—because the stars will soon
begin to shine again in all of Europe. The Nazis are irked
by the fact that these stars can not be dimmed. They are
mad. "Whom the Gods would destroy, they first make
mad." This is the beginning of the end of the Nazi terror.
