ISRAEL, LET OP UW SAACK!

A Distinguished Author's Pleajor a Jewish Army in Palestine

By PIERRE VAN PAASSEN

In V days of yore, when clouds
-4 gathering on the national
•ariton of Holland—that is to
• when one or the other King
•uis of France began to con-
-.ire with the Spanish court or
• •th the German Emperor
•- the safety of the Dutch
• I; • • blic, and Dutch diplomats
• wind of these intrigues and
•• lots—word of the coming or
• • wing danger was passed from
• iuth to mouth in Holland, and
'•• e Dominies from their pulpits
•anted the chief magistrates and
•• e people with these words:
olland, let op 13w *sack! --
•hich means: Hollanders, keep
. our eye on your own national
• iness.
That word I would like to ad-
• -- to the Jewish people, say-
•
with all the sincerity of
•hich I am capable: Israel, let
• Uw saaek—keep your eye on
national cause.
• I AB FROM A GOY
Yet it goes against my inner-
•-4- feelings to repeat this word
t all. I do not like to mix in
• • r people's business. It might
• considered a great deal of
on my part for me, a
, to come unasked with gra-
• advice to the Jewish peo-
which is an old people, the

race, which has seen every-

is a petiole whit-

•• • -Jew.
Nevertheless I feel I must say
•: braid, let op Uw meek.
To the non-Jew this matter of
■ • : a Jewish Army looks Wee
straightforward, logical, emi-
•• tly just, democratic and Am-
• — proposition. Your na-
• • • home is threatened. You
•t to rush to arms and
the aggressor, who has
-• and martyred and looted
• trampled your brethren all
- Europe. You decide to de-
• • yourself. You want to fight
and carry the national ban-
-4 of the Jewish people to victory
the pagan cross of the Nazis.
• t is correct. There is nothing
••• . with that. The non-Jew
•• • -4 • • ds that. The American

course of history; but they shun
the fighting as they shun all hon-
est work."
NAZI LIBELS
They taunt the Jews. They
dare them to come out to fight
back. At the same time they
hand the Jaws over to the oppro-
bium of 'their -fellow citizens in
America, cresti—g anti-Semitism.
For that broadcast was not aim-
ed particularly at the diatin-
gashed Senators who support
the Jewish Army plan. No, that
broadeast was addressed to the
Amerlean people. The Nazis said,
in effect: "-Look at the Jews—
they say thero ► ant to fight, but
they won't Refit All that talk
is camouflage, eye-wash to be-
fuddle the American people. You
watch and see how they will get,
out of it. They let you non-
Jews do at the fighting."
They know perfectly well in
Germany that Jews are going
into the army in this country
like any one else, just as loyally,
with the same fervent patriot-
ism. But they also know that
the home-bred anti-Semites and
Fascists have started whispering
campaigns that Jews are trying
all sorts of tricks to be exempted.
The _Germans are backing up
this cantillitn. They know as
well as, it do that it is Great
Britain that is keeping us from
forming a Jewish Army in Pal-

estine. But the mass of the peo-
ple in the United States do not
know that The people of the
United States would not under-
stand it, nor would they believe
it if we were to tell them the
naked truth—that the British

,

refuse the Jews permission to
form an army for the-defense of
a crucial point in the British
chain of imperial defenses. The
American people do not know
this. But the Germans do. And
the Gerthans are telling our peo-
ple: "Yeti see how Polish troops

have to be imported into Pales-
tine, and Greeks; and, before
long, it will be American boys.
Bat those Jews—they will not
lift a finger for the defense of
their homeland."
I have not suddenly become
anti-British. I am not anti-
British at alt I am pro-British
I Want to• see Britain win the
war. "I hope to see the reorgan-
ization of the world, and the
leadership in the new world that
is to emerge1 from the present
cata'Aysm, placed in the hands
of the two great English-speak-
ing commonwealths, the Ameri-
can and the British.
FOR A NEW LEADERSHIP
But it is precisely for this rea-
son that I want to see British
leadership of a type different
from that which has prevailed in
the Cononial Office hitherto. For
that leadership is an imperialist
leadership, the leadership of
men without vision, without
knowledge, without awareness of
international social- righteous-
ness. That leadership has made
all the mistakes that have been
made since Munich; that leader-
shop has cost us such vital defense
positions—vital for our Western
Hemisphere, according to Lord
Beaverbrook's own paper, the
Daily Express—as Singapore and
Hong Kong and Java and Bur-
ma; and tomorrow it will per-

haps cost us India and Suez.
This matter of raising a Jew-
ish Army is a very serious thing.
It is no wild escapade, no pub-
licity stunt for anybody. .It is
one of the weightiest considera-
tions that must be envisaged by
the people and the Government
of the United States, because it
is closely, inextricably linked
with a successful pursuit of the
war and with the future of
America.
I am not anti-British—I am
anti-imperialist. And I ant anti-
imperialist not only because it
is the faults and errors and
blunderings of European imper-
ialism that we, as Americans, are
now called on to repair. Not
only for that. reason am I anti-
imperialist, but because I believe
that when our President and
Henry Wallace say that we are
engaged in this struggle to es-
tablish the Four Freedoms every-
where in this world, this is not
just a slogan, a device to win the
war or to squelch discussion, but
that these men are in earnest.
And to me "everywhere in the
world" does not mean only Lon-
don and Washington and Phila-
delphia and Paris and Amster-
dam, but also Madras and Cal-
cutta and Canton and Korea and
Jerusalem.
And in this respect I am no
more anti-imperialist than the
