Forty-two THE JEWISH NEWS Governor Van Wagoner Sends Message to Michigan Jewry • -rderil OP )11Q II WAN 11110IITIVAI OlF101111 LAMB /NO 'MI ins air IP. 11 ► •111.M• To the Young Jewish Women of America By MRS. FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT Statement addressed to Miss Martha Neumark, executive Ed- itor of Independent Jewish . Press Service, as a Message of En- couragement to American Jew.: ish women confronted with the problem of discrimination. Mr. Philip Slomovitz Editor, The Jewish News 2111 Penobscot Building Detroit, Michigan Dear Phil: It is a pleasure to extend New Year greetings to the loyal Americans in the ranks of Jewry, through the columns of a splendid new publication edited by an old friend. President Roosevelt, in stating the Four Freedoms we are fighting for in this war, said in a new way what the Jewish people have said for centuries: that all men are free and equal before God. In the gigantic task before the people of Michigan--the job of furnishing one-third of the weapons of victory, of send- ing many of their sons and husbands to the fighting fronts, of each person contributing in War Bonds and services to the needs of total war--in this all-inclusive job, Jew and non-Jew work and fight side by side, in mutual respect and purpose. Very sincerely yours. GOVERNOR. Congressman Dingell Offers greetings, Hope for Victory It seems a bit ironic during this Holy season to extend greet- ings and good wishes when the world is afire and when human- ity, more especially the unfor- tunate Jews, gropes battered and bleeding,Ainto death. But there is a brighter side perceptible beyond this mad and cataclysmic struggle which threatens all religion, civiliza- tion and humanity. We can see, if we but raise our eyes from the littered and profaned ground and look toward the horizon, for the legions of A merica are on the march. They are eager to liberate the enslaved peoples of the earth and anxious to relieve them from the forged German yoke. Yes, to obliterate for all time this sinful imposition of a godless ideology of racial supe- riority centered in Pan-German- ism. America and her Allies will not falter nor fail in this gi- gantic undertaking. The fight will continue if needs be until the last vestige of oppression, hatred, paganism and German sophistry are destroyed upon the smoldering ruins of what might have been a happier land. Therefore, let us, Jew and Gen- tile alike, offer a prayer as we break bread together, that the God of all shall give us fortitude MRS. ROOSEVELT I am very glad indeed to have this oportunity to send a mes- sage to the young Jewish women through the medium of the In- dependent Jewish Press Service. The problems which t h e young Jewish women face in this crisis are similar to those of other minority groups, while at the same time, they face the problems which face all the women of this country. We have in this country, worked for many years on a great adven- ture, the experiment in Democ- racy. We have not as yet achieved a perfected govern- ment or a completely satisfying way of life for all of our peo- ple, but our way of life seems to us to provide the best means of progress. Flint, Mich., extend heartiest congratulations to Mr. Philip Slomovitz and his staff for the tremendous success of The Jew ish News. Already Mr. Slomovitz has created a Jewish newspaper for Michigan Jewry that is far beyond our expectations. We consider it the best of its kind in America. We salute Mr. Slomo- vitz on this New Year. May you derive as.- much Nachas from Michigan Jewry as it has de- rived from you. May the New Year have for you and your House health, happiness and peace. RABBI S. Z. FINEBERG, Congregation Beth Israel.
