We have experienced a very sad year in the life of all peoples and especially the Jewish people, and we shall all be praying during the Holy Days which commence this Friday night for a year of peace and of freedom. As we usher in Rosh Hashanah, we must all remember the sad past, and we must think in terms of hope and courage of the future. I am thinking of the following lines by the great Hebrew poet. Jetiuda Halevi, who wrote nearly 800 years ago: Happy is he that watches, drawing near, Until he sees Thy glorious lights arise, And over whom Thy dawn breaks full and clear Set in the Orient skies. But happiest he, who, with exultant eyes, The bliss of Thy redeemed ones shall behold And see Thy youth renewed as in the days of old. This is the true spirit of our peonle—never to give up hope awl always to look forward to a better future; to trust in God and to retain a youthful outlook on life. On the occasion of the New Year, this column is longer than usual, and you will have more to read during the two days of Rosh Hashanah. I repeat my good wishes to You on the New Year and I. pray &ma hope that of you and your families will be blessed with health and happiness and that we shall all welcome a victorious peace during the months to come. HAUENSTEIN Friday, September 11, 1942 JEWISH NEWS ment, when the Ruler of Life sits on the world's throne to in- vestigate the doings of man, and allot to each, as it were, his destiny for the coming year, whether for life or for death, for happiness or for woe. There are three lessons to be drawn from the observance of the New Year's Day. The first one tells us to look back upon the past year with its exper- iences of joy and sorrow, with gratitude to God, the Ruler of our Destiny, and renew our trust in Him. The second teach- ing tells us to look back upon our doings and misdoings during the year, recognizing that God, the stern Judge of the world, searches our hearts and reads every thought therein, and de- termine to begin the new life with better resolves and higher purposes. The third lesson tells us to look upon the life of man- kind and especially upon the history of Israel in the light of God's Revelations on Mount Moriah, Mount Sinai and Mount Zion. Sees Near East As Battle Front Many More Signatures Ex- pected for Petition Against Against Nazi Atrocities NEW YORK (JPS)—More than 100,000 signatures already have been obtained for a petition ad- dressed to President RooseVelt on behalf of the Jewish victims of Nazi atrocities, the Jewish Labor Committee, which is gathering the signatures, has announced. The campaign to obtain support for the petition ends September 15. Originally designed as an ap- peal to the President to speak out -- in warning to the Nazis against their continued massacre of Jews, the petition is now a token of ap- preciation to the President for his message to the recent Madison Rear Admiral H.
