YOUTH AND
ROSH HASHANAH
Rosh Hashanah has come, but
how many of us who go to make
up the modern youth of today
actually realize its dignity and
significance? How many of us
can truthfully say that we know
why we observe this sacred oc-
casion?

cultural activities, home hospital-
ity, service to troops in transit,
and personal assistance, both
here and overseas—activities
sentially Jewish, specifically re-

duty. Six civilian rabbis went
overseas this Passover to con-
duct seder services at bases all
the way from the Caribbean to
Alaska, including Hawaii, the
Canal Zone, Porto Rico and Ber-
muda. Other religious occasions
have been marked by appropri-
ate observance, often under the
Board's leadership, and no Fri-
day night ever passes an Ameri-
can military post without some
form of Jewish Sabbath services.

Hawaii after Pearl Harbor con-
fronted the Board with a prodig-

one. Civilian evacuation, hospi-

When our elders observe a
Jewish holiday and go to the
synagogue for prayer, they know
its significance and why it is
deeply observed. A poor alibi of
modern youth is that "this is a
differenet age."
For the youth to go to the
synagogue only because of ap-
