Hull to Intervene with Vichy

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Secretary: of State Cor-
dell Hull this week expressed a desire to take up it
a "strong and condemnatory manner" the large-scale
deportations of Jews from unoccupied France. He
added, however, that he would like to get as full a
statement of facts as possible before doing so.
Asked about requests from Jewish organisations
that he use his good offices with the Vichy Govern-
ment to prevent the handing over of more victims to
Hitler, Hull replied that such requests are always
welcome "but scarcely necessary in cases of whole-
sale inhuman treatment such as this is reported
to be."

SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND—"The Army could
use a lot of Itzkowitzes and be better off," a colonel

of the American Expeditionary Forces here declared,
pointing at Louis Itzkowitz, a Brooklyn Jewish • boy
who "made good as a corporal from the big city." The
American officer praised - the Jewish corporal for his

mastering the jeep in the training areas of America
and England: Itzkowitx, - who- -joined - the U. S. Army

Deportations Threatened This Month

ZURICH—The deportation of all Jews from Ger-
many, Austria, Holland, Belgium and occupied France
will be completed by the end of September, it was
reported here this week from Berlin. . .. The report
says that orders have been issued to the Gestapo in all
these countries to speed the deportation of Jews to
Poland and occupied Russia. . . . The Swiss press re-
ports that the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem is now in Athens
where the Nazis have opened a school for Arab prop-
agandists. •

Hungarians Spread Anti-Semitism

ZURICH—A demand that Jews be barred from
using railway sleeping cars is voiced in a decision,
adopted by the Transylvanian Party in Hungary. One
of these papers, Uj Magyarsag, carries an article
complaining that "only 44 percent of the Jewish en-
terprises in Hungary have been completely Aryanized."

Streicher': Arrest Reported

LONDON—Julius Streicher, one of the most viru-
lent anti-Semites in Germany and editor of Der
Steurmer, pornographic anti-Jewish magazine, is
reported to have been arrested by Hitler, according
to a Stockholm dispatch appearing this week in the
Daily Express. The Stockholm report asserted that
Streicher had been charged with embezzling party
funds. Reports reached here during the past year
indicated that Streicher had lost favor with Hitler and
had been relegated to a minor position.

LONDON—A decision to • raise a special fund
among the Jews of Great Britain in response to the
appeal of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in Rus-
sia to the Jews of the Allied countries to contribute
1,000 tanks and 500 bombers to the Red Army was
adopted here this week at a conference of the United
-Jewish Committee to Aid Russia. The meeting was at-
tended by 150 delegates representing all shades of
opinion among British Jewry.

PITTSBURGH, (JTA)—"He's a swell guy, and
I don't blame any girl for falling for him," writes
Hyman Grossman, 25, about his new room-mate at
the Air Force Officers' Training School' in Miami
Beach. "Gosh, thousands of women gather under
the window every morning just to see him march to
breakfast. But he's regular.
"You knew, when he heard about us Grossmans
having six brothers in the army, he actually asked
for a picture. Imagine, HE wanted OUR pictures."
Lots of people want to see the Grossman family
pictures—families of six soldiers are somewhat rare,
but,. when an actor aski for a picture, it does seem
strange. This particular actor-room-mate is famed
movie hero Clark Gable, who enlisted _last week.

STOCKHOLM—The citizens of the small town
of Oestzaan, in northern Holland, have been repri-
manded by the German occupation authorities for
assaulting the collaborationist burgomaster of the town
when he attempted to arrest a Jew who was not
wearing a yellow Star-of-David badge upon his coat,
the Nazi press arriving here this week from Amster-
dam reveals.

Nazies To Deport Holland Jews To Russia

LONDON—Nazi authorities in Holland have issued
an announcement stating that all Jews between 18
and 40 years of age will be deported to the devastated
areas of occupied Russia, while all physically fit
Jews between 40 and 60 years of age will be sent to
Germany for forced labor after undergoing a physical
examination. The announcement, which reached Dutch
government circles here this week, warns non-Jewish
doctors In Holland not to furnish medical certificates
for disability to Jews between 40 and 60 who are
sufficiently healthy to be sent for work in the Reich.

Policemen Shot For Aiding Jews

LONDON—Forty

French policemen have been
shot in Paris by the Nazis and 300 police officials
were arrested on the charge that they helped Jews
avoid deportation, Andre Philip, Fighting French
Commissioner of Labor and Interior, reported here
this week.

Deportations Resented in Vichy

ZURICH—Mass-demonstrations protesting till' de-
portation of Jews from unoccupied France to Nazi-held
territories in Eastern Europe broke out this week in
Vichy, Marseilles, Nice, and several other cities in the
unoccupied part of France as police led through the
streets of these cities hundreds of Jews who were
rounded up for transportation to the Nazi-occupied
zone. Huge crowds of Frenchmen, especially students,
participated in these demonstrations. The students, dis-
regarding possible penalties, wore yellow Mayen
Davids inside of which uncomplimentary slogans ridi-
culing the Vichy regime - were inscribed. Many of
them shouted: "The traitor Fernand de Brinon has a
Jewish wife" and "the French representative in Paris
has worked for years for Jewish bankers."
