MEET FRED M. BUTZEL
Leadership qualities are as relative as any other elements in
human experiences. Some are more dynamic than others, some
are less human, some more selfish.

In Jewish life, leadership, in the main, has centered in the

East. At first it was Philadelphia, then New York. Baltimore has
played a signifigant role in building leadership, and Chicago and
the western coast have made some contributions to the guidance
of Jewish life.
Froth the point of view of actual community achievements,
Detroit has assumed an important place in recent years. The
world's auto center has been first in fund-raising, first in estab-
lishing new traditions in community building, first in creating a
sense of unity which should serve as a guide for other cities.
Detroit's accomplishments are undoubtedly the result of col-
lective efforts, but they stem in the main from the inspiration
derived from one man—Fred M. Butzel.

YOUTHFUL AT 65
On Aug. 25, Mr. Butzel celebrated his 65th birthday. In
Detroit it was an occasion for celebration. For the rest of the
country it should be a signal for stock-taking and for recog-
nition of certain merits which make for genuine leadership
qualities.
-
He is a great personality, and his spirit belies his age. He is
as popular with youth as he is with the people who have been
his associates during the past half century in various community
efforts. He is revered as much by non-Jews as by Jews.

A GREAT AMERICAN
Fred M. Butzel hails from a pioneering Michigan family of
German Jews, and he has inherited a sense of community values
which does credit to his ancestors.
Take as a typical instance the movement for the settlement
of Jews on farms. Michigan was a pioneering state in this respect.
One of the earliest colonies of Jews in this country was the set-
tlement in Bad Axe, Mich., known as the Palestine Colony. Fred
Butzel's uncle and his father's (Magnus) business partner, Martin
Butzel, was one of the Detroit Jewish leaders who helped the
immigrants establish themselves in this colony. Its short life
was a source of regret to the Butzels. Now, Fred Butzel continues
the family tradition by doing all he can to encourage Jews to
retain an interest in farming, and perhaps it may well be said
that his devotion to the movement for Palestine's reconstruction
is due in part to his desire to see Jews productive and self-
sustaining.
Butzel had no economic worries. He came from a family well-
established—not necessarily rich—German Jews. He studied law
at the University of Michigan and his practice has been limited
in the main to "helping the underdog," to assisting a poor immi-
grant family, to encouraging a downcast youth.
From the very day on which he began life "on his own," he
threw in his lot with the needy. He became an "honorary social
worker." When the history of social work is completely compiled—
especially Jewish social work—Fred M. Butzel, -the non-profes-
sional, the volunteer, will receive the rating of "the greatest of
them all."
The reason is a very obvious one: He is a great American
with a passionate desire to see fair play rule at all costs.
That's why he is currently involved in a battle with the
medical profession over the issue of recognizing refugee physicians
and admitting them to active practice. That's why he is a Zionist
who desires to see oppressed Jews acquire freedom in an envir-
onment of their own. That is why he admires the Palestinian
Jews who fight for their rights. That is why he is not opposed
to a Jewish army.

William Hordes Makes Known Decision of Jerusalem Office
of Jewish National Fund Honoring
Detroit Leader .

William Hordes, chairman of
the Jewish National Fund Coun-
cil of Detroit, in extending felici-
tations to Fred M. Butzel on-the
occasion of his 65th birthday, an-
nounced that he has received
word from the national headquar-
ters of the J.N.F., 41 E. 42nd St.,
New York, that the Fred M.
Butzel Forest is being established
at Kfar Hahoresh, according to
word received from the Jewish
National Fund Head Office in
Jerusalem.
To do honor to Detroit's Jew-
ish citizen No. 1, the Jewish com-
munity of De-
troit has initia-'
ted the estab-
lishment of a
forest of 10,000
trees as an ever-
lasting tribute to
Nft 13iitzel. This,
effort has re-
ceived the unan-
imous support
of all elements William Hordes
in the Jewish community, Zion-
ist and non-Zionist alike.
Mr. Hordes announced that a
substantial sum was raised to
wards the realization of this ef-
fort and that the balance which
is required towards the 10,000
trees, amounting to $15,000, will
be secured in the nearest future,
so that the full 10,000 trees may
be planted in honor of Mr. Butzel.
A special message of greetings
to Mr. Butzel was wired by Dr.
Israel Goldstein, president of the
Jewish National Fund, and Men-
del N. Fisher, executive director.
Mr. Hordes, in speaking for
his colleagues including the rep-
resentatives of all Zionist groups
in the community, said:
"The tree is the symbol of the
rebirth of our people in Palestine
Today, when millions of Jews are
being subjected to the severest
cruelties, it is encouraging that
the following slogan has been
adopted by the Jewish National
Fund throughout the world: 'IN
THIS WAR ISRAEL STANDS
AS AN ANCIENT OLIVE TREE
IN A STORK BATTERED BUT
NOT BROKEN.' Israel may be
bent, but can never be destroyed.
Like the tree itself—one branch
may be broken here and there.
but building as we do the Jewish
National Home on the land ac-

quired by the Jewish National
Fund, we dig deep, deep into the
soil of Palestine. It is in this spirit
that in wishing to do honor to a
great American, to a great Jew,
we could not find a more suit-
able tribute than the establish-
ment of this forest which will
forever link up the name of Mr.
Butzel with his people."

There is not an institution in the land that has to its credit

has Fred M. Butzel. An intimate friend might have an oppor-

Has he any prejudices? Who hasn't? But he has that remark-

But his prejudices are based on principles and convictions.
When it comes to narrow discriminations, he fights like a demon
against them.
He is president of Parkside Hospital, a Colored institution in
IDetroit.
Do you know another Jew in Detroit who has such distinction?
