5703 Calendar Issued

A tradition established by the Jewish National Fund
Copyright 1942 by Independent
Council of Detroit last year of sending a Scroll of names
Jewish Press Service, Inc.)
of Detroiters as a message of cheer to the Jews of Palestine
is being repeated. it was announced this week by William
Hordes, president of the Council.
FROM THE FOUR CORNERS
1,-n

Mr. Hordes said that nearly
000 names were appended to the
previous scroll sent as a New
Year's message to Palestine Jews
on the occasion of the advent of
the year 5702. Rabbi Morris Ad-
ler, who was chairman of last
year's project, received an ac-
knowledgment from Elias Ep-
stein, of the head office' of the
Jewish National Fund, who wrote
in part:
"It (the Scroll) has encour-
aged us at a critical time and
served to strengthen the bond
between Eretz Israel and our
fellow Jews in Detroit."
The Scroll to be sent this year,
on the occasion of the New Year
5703, will carry the names of all
those who participate by paying
$1 for an individual inscription
or $3 for a family inscription.
Inscriptions are being accepted
at the local Zionist office, 1044
Penobscot Bldg., by Mr. Hordes,
members of the Ladies' Auxil-
iary of the Jewish National Fund
and of the J. N. F. Council and
Rabbi Morris Adler, chairman of
special gifts.
Mr. Hordes announced that a
special meeting of the J. N. F.
Council will be held at 8:45
p. m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at
the Tuxedo - Holmur Talmud
Torah, to conduct high holiday
plans for the J. N. F.
"On Wings of Hope and Courage
Victory Will Come . .."
American flyers and equipment
have played a dominant part in
the defense
of the Middle
Eastern lands,
including Pal-
estine. The
Jewish N a -
tional Fund is
serving t h e
same purpose
through i t s
"Land for Victory" work. For the
furtherance of this task and on
the advent of the New Year, the
Fund has issued a new series of
sympolie stamps (reproduced
here) which American Zionists
and supporters of the Jewish Na-
tional Home in Palestine have
taken up enthusiastically.
The Fund, which is also known
by its Hebrew name of Keren
Kayemeth Lelsrael and is the
land acquisition and reclamation
agency of the Zionist movement,
has kept aloft the banner of hope
and courage. Since the outbreak
of the war, its activities have not
e. only remained uninterrupted but
have made considerable progress
in the field of Palestine land re-
demption.
A special series of the new
J.N.F. Stamp issue . has been
made available to Synagogue
committees throughout the nation
in 5c, 10c and blank denomina-
tions for decorating the High Hol-
iday Synagogue admission cards
in acknowledgment of popular
contributions toward the Keren
Kayemeth wartime program.
$12,259,258.91 Contributed For
Lair Redemption
Of the sum of $12,259,258.91
contributed by American Jewry
from 1910 to 1941 for the redemp-
tion of land in Palesttine, $1,713.-
322,76 was made available during
1941, Dr. Israel Goldstein, pres-
ident of the Jewish National Fund
of America, announced.
These significant figures, to-
gether with a summary graphi-
cally describing more than 40
years of work in the redemption
of the land, are revealed in the
72-page calendar which summar-
izes succinctly the developmentts
in connection with the war-time
program of the Fund. The 5703
calendar has just been issued to
more than 1,000 committees
throughout the United States
which carry on the work in be-
half of the Fund.in this country.
The theme of the calendar this

year is: "In this war Israel stands
as an ancient Olive Tree in a
storm—battered, but not broken."
A special section is devoted to
the work of the Jewish National
Fund in America in which the
significant contribution made by
the Fund in this country is sum-
marized over a period of 21
years.
The Jewish National Fund cal-
endar is a source of authentic in-
formation on many phases of Pal-
estine and is illustrated with a
map of Eretz Israel and with
graphs and charts.
The calendars are now being
distributed from national head-
quarters, and may be obtained
without cost by writing to the
Jewish National Fund, 41 E. 42nd
St., New York.

As Ail Ancient Olive Tree .
"There is hope for a tree if it
be cut down that it will sprout
again; and its tender branch will
not die if its roots age in the soil."
(Job XIV, 7-8).
As an ancient Olive Tree in
the midst of a storm, -so does the
Jewish People stand in this war
of which it was the first victim.
This significant message is con-
veyed in the illustration on the
front cover of the calendar. The
People of Israel, together with all
of civilized mankind, stand in this
crisis, battered but not broken by
the juggernaut of oppression and
cruelty, is the theme of the cal-
endar.

Bnai Brith Adds
To United Nations
War Relief Fund

WASHINGTON, D. C.—Contri-
butions amounting to $4,000 for
war relief and refugee aid to
- ictims of Axis aggression in five
of the United Nations, announc-
ed here by the central adminis-
trative board of Bnai Brith,
brought to $700,000 the total of
Bnai Brith funds made available
for these purposes in 16 coun-
tries since September, 1939. Of
this sum, $170,000 was made
available since Pearl Harbor.
The new contributions, all
made from Bnai Brith's war ser-
vice fund, were $2,000 to Rus-
sian War Relief, Inc.; $1,000 to
the University in Exile in New
York City; $500 to United China
Relief and $250 each to the Brit-
ish War Relief Society and the
Queen Wilhelmina• Fund
(Dutch).

Adolph S. Oko, once a great
literary figure as Librarian of
the Hebrew Union College, CM-
cinnati, is now employed in the
library of the American Jewish
Committee in New York.
Credit David Sarnoff, RCA
President, and member of the
President's Committee on Fair
Employment Practice, with in-
sisting that "discrimination must
be stopped" on both National
Broadcasting Company and Blue
Networks. Saying he had never
known there was anti-Negro bias
on the two chains, he called to-
gether studio executives and laid
down the law that hereafter Ne-
gro musicians could not be bar-
red as staff artists.
INTERESTING PEOPLE
Arthur Szyk, the cartoonist,
who is more proud of his son in
the Fighting French forces than
of his latest magazine cover, re-
marks that some of his friends
"think I'm being played for a
sucker, because I accept so many
charitable assignments. I'm in-
terested in people, not money."
Harry Salter, musical director
for popular Hobby Lobby, was
brought to the United States
from Rumania when he was 6,
in 1908. He may be a good vio-
linist too, but that was because
he stole time for rehearsals from
his geology studies, in which he
was majoring while attending
New York University.
Don't rush to claim Sir Wil-
liam Rothenstein, the famous
British artist, as a Jew, even
though some of his most famous
paintings include "Jews Mourn-
ing," "The Exposition of the Tal-
mud" and similar themes. He
was born a Jew; once belonged
to the Orthodox synagogue in
England of which the late Chief
Rabbi , of Palestine Kook was
spiritual leader; was once active
in Jewish affairs. Knighted in
1931, Sir William is reputed to
have joined the Church.
SAY IT ISN'T SO
There's no end to lunacy, judg-
ing by the interpretation given
by anti-Semities to the new
traffic signals in New York City,
where the full-round red-and-
green signs have been covered
over by black discs except for
tiny slits cross-wise just under
the hoods of the lights for per-
manent black-out purposes. The
Coughlinites say the crosses were
installed on the traffic signals to
remind Jews at every street cor-
ner that this is still a Christian
country.
A conservative criticizing an-
other person is merely "discuss-
ing." A liberal doing the same
thing is "smearing". That must
be George Sokolsky's definition
since few commentators in Amer-
ica have so often "discussed"
President Roosevelt, Felix Frank-
furter and the New Dealers. A
few days after he complained he
had been "smeared" by a Jew-
ish news agency, Sokolsky "dis-
cussed" Fight for Freedom lead-
er and detective-story writer Rex
Stout, creator of Nero Wolfe. As
part of the "discussion" Sokolsky
said of Stout "he had, if my'
memory serves me, something to
do with the New Masses at one
time."

citizen of the United Nations
regardless of his domicile.
We must know that the bomb
which falls upon Haifa makes
its impact on the lives of people
as far apart geographically as
London, San Francisco and
Hawaii; that when a Chinese
village is destroyed by blood-
thirsty Japanese, the concussion
reverberates even to Topeka,
Kansas; that when Sevastopol
fell the threat to New York in-
creased; that when a Captain
Colin Kelly or a Private Louis
Schleiffer showed noble hero-
ism at the cost of their lives,
their heroism fortified the New
Zealander fighting in Egypt.
And so we must have com-
plete unity. Unity within this
country; unity between us and
all of our allies of the United
Nations.
We must work shoulder to
shoulder with our allies; we
must have no Misunderstand-
ings; we must avoid all recrim-
inations.

PALESTINE AWAITS YOUR
CHEERING WORDS!

An encouraging word goes a long way in strength-
ening the morale of those who are engaged in the
battle for life and liberty against the Axis.
Last year, Detroit Jews established the tradition
of sending a message of hope and courage to. the
Jews of Palestine in the form of

A NEW YEAR SCROLL

Elias M. Epstein of the Head Office of the Keren

Kayemeth Lelsrael (Jewish National Fund, acknowl-
edged the message and wrote to Rabbi Morris Adler

of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, chairman of the
committee which enlisted co-operation in getting up

this Scroll:
"It has encouraged us at a critical time , and served
to strengthen the bond between Eretz Israel and our

fellow Jews in Detroit."
This year, the Jewish National Fund Council of

Detroit again calls upon the Jews of Detroit to enlist

their names in a similar message.
Individual inscriptions on this New Year Scroll
are $1, and family inscriptions, $3.
Send your name and remittance NOW for par-
ticipation in this Scroll to any. of the following:
