When Lou Holtz, comedian of
stage, screen and radio fame, last
appeared in Detroit, Norman
Blum, member of A.Z.A. 63, joc-
ularly shook hands with him on

a vow that Whoever went to war
first, would bring the other back
a Japanese head.
The picture shows Lou and
Norm shaking hands on their
agreement.
Blum became the first to go,
when he left last Friday as a
flying cadet in the Army -Air
Corps. Realizing that their agree-
-lent was a little on the grue-
some side, but still wanting to
keep the spirit of the pledge,
Norman has written to Lou Holtz
promising him a Japanese tooth,
"and it won't be pulled by a
dentist," he added.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Abra-

Norman attended Northern High,

BOYCOTT
Knights of Columbus, Catholic
organization, has launched a boy-
cott against the New York Post
for alleging that Senator David
Walsh of Massachusetts was
linked to a Brboklyn "house of
degradation" frequented by Nazis,
according to Variety. Catholics
have been asked to stop reading
Dorothy Schiff Backer's paper
and not patronize Post advertis-
ers. And advertisers have been
asked to discontinue.. . . No Jew-
ish organization has yet suggest-
ed the boycotting of the 2,000,000-
circulation New York Daily News
(3,000,000 on Sundays) which last
week plastered the anti-Semitic
issue all over its editorial page
with crocodile tears to the effect
that Governor Herbert IL Leh-
man had been denied a fifth term
as Chief Executive because he is
a Jew. That issue was dragged
in to besmirch the candidate of
President Roosevelt for New
York's Democratic Gubernatorial
nomination, Senator James Mead,
who also has Lehman's 0. K.
Vying with the Chicago Tribune
for the most virulent anti-Roose-
velt editorials,- the Daily News
lives on its Jewish advertisers.

THAT GREENSPAN JUDGE
Benjamin E. Greenspan, who
still clings to the title of Judge,
although he failed of reappoint-
ment to the New York magistra-
cy years ago, is the man who
captured nation-wide newspaper
space, particularly in Hearst
sheets, by championing William
Griffin, New York Enquirer pub-
lisher, one of 28 indicted for al-
leged conspiracy to undermine
U. S. Army morale. . . . Green-
span writes occasionally for Grif-
fin's Enquirer. His style: "I have
found within my experience that
where there was no religion, no
God, there was delinquency in
some form." . . . They say that
Greenspan became rigidly ortho-
dox a long time ago when his
young daughter was on her
death bed. He is said to have
gone on his knees, pleaded di-
rectly with God, promising that
if his daughter lived he would
observe all the Jewish traditions
with the greatest piety. His
daughter lived. . . , I am indebted
to Variety for another item. It
recalls that "Gerald Griffin, a
brother and once night club col-
umnist for the Enquirer, last year
became embroiled in charges that
he was anti-Semitic. Gerald
Griffin was then executive sec-
retary of the Arnerican Guild of
Variety Artists. . . . Greenspan,
incidentally, also came to the de-
fense of Gerald Griffin when
AGVA held a hearing on the
charges that its executive secre-
tary had made anti-Semitic ut-
terances at . the Dorsey party."
. . . Everybody felt Stephen Wise
was eminently justified for the
tongue-lashing he administered
to Greenspan for claiming to
speak for the American Jewish
Congress in defense of Griffin.

THIS AND THAT
Among the names mentioned
for the Governorship of Puerto
Rico is that of Dr. Herman B.
Baruch, who is an expert on
Caribbean questions though his
name is not as well known as
that of his brother, Bernard M.
Baruch . . .

Pierre van Paassen recently
had to use a "striking" argg-
ment to convince an anti-Semite
that racial and religious intoler-
ance has no place in our democ-
racy.
Those Washington quarters
that were most vociferous
against Melvyn Douglas' OCD ap-
pointment-- some months ago are
again complaining loudly now
that he is taking time off (from
a job for which he doesn't get
paid) to make a picture . . . We
wonder what they'll find to beef
about when he enlists in the Air
Corps, a step he's said to be
contemplating very seriously.
Hollywood is preparing a film
on Thomas G. Masaryk, and is
looking for an actor to imper-
sonate the late Justice Louis D.
Brandeis, who backed the
Czech's national aspirations in
the Wilsonian days.
WEEKLY GIGGLE
From Picture Scoop, the new
illustrated monthly, we bring
you this tale, credited to com-
edian Danny Kaye.. . . A Ger-
man, it seems, had a terrible
toothache, and deeided to have
the bothersome molar removed
. . So he went to one of Ber-
lin's foremost dentists, who ex-
amined his mouth, took X-rays
of the tooth, went into consul-
tation with an assistant and then
finally said to the patient: "We
can extract the tooth, but it will
cost you $10,000, American mon-
ey" . . . The sufferer couldn't be-
lieve he had heard correctly . . .
"Ten thousand dollars!" he cried
. . . "Ten thousand dollars to pull
one tooth? I never heard of
such a thing!" The dentist
shrugged, and pointed out: "My
dear sir, you forget that we'll
have to extract that tooth
through you ear." . . Through
my ear!" the patient exclaimed,
now convinced that he had
strayed into the psychopathic
ward . . . "Why can't you pull
it through my mouth?" "This is
Germany," the dentist replied
stiffly . . . "Nobody is allowed
to open his mouth here."

sociated with the Detroit Satur-
day Night as financial editor.
In 1919, Mr. Nathan left his
newspaper nost with the Detroit
Saturday Night to become the
executive secretary of the De-
troit Stock Exchange. In 1922 he
left the stock exchange to open
a brokerage business of his own.
In California Mr. Nat4n was
at first engaged in public rela-
tions work, and several years
ago was named director of the
United Jewish Welfare Fund of
Los Angeles, a post he held at
the time of his death.
Mr. Nathan was well known in
Detroit, not only professionally
but as an ardent worker in nu-
merous community causes.
