MISSING IN ACTION-

Lieutenant (junior grade) Wil-
liam Lipsett, U. S. N., of New
Bedford, Mass., formerly report-
ed as missing in action "some-
where in the Philippines," ar-
rived safely in Australia with
four other United States naval
officers on July 27, after two
months of adventurous sailing.
The five officers had escaped
from the Philippines in a native
sailing boat, 70 feet long and
about as flimsy as a canoe. For
weeks the officers stayed afloat
in this tiny craft. Their only nav-
igation equipment consisted of
an alarn_ clock, a compass, a
page from a schoolbook atlas and
a portable radio that sometimes
worked.

Captain Dan Golenternek,
Army Medical Corps, of Tyler,
Texas, has been reported miss-
ing in action since the fall of the
Philippines. When last heard
from, Captain Golenternek was
with the fighting forces on the
island of Cebu, in the Philip-
pines. His mother, Mrs. A. Go-
lenternek, lives in Tyler.
Lieutenant Harry Katz, of
Corsicana, Texas, missing in ac-
tion "somewhere in the Philip-
pines." An uncle of Harry's, who
lives in Corsicana, received a
letter from the lieutenant about
four months ago. Since then, the
family has had no word, except
for the "missing in action" notice
from the War Department.
PRISONER OF WAR
Herman Davis, 3rd Class Phar-
macist's Mate, U.S.N., of Eliza-
beth, N. J., is reported a prisoner
of the Japanese at present. Davis
was formerly with a Marine De-
tachment in Peiping, China,
which was captured by the Jap-
anese. He is believed to be in
a prison camp at Shanghai. Da-
vis has been in the navy for three
years. His father, Mr. Abraham
Davis, lives in Elizabeth.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Sergeant Robert Clifford, Army
Air Corps, of Werth Amboy. N.J.,
has received the Order of the
Purple Heart for wounds receiv-
ed while in action during the
Pearl Harbor attack_ Clifford is
stationed at Hickam Field, Ha-
waii, where he has been since
America's entry into the war.
He joined the Air Corps in April
1941. His family lives in Perth
Amboy.
