A ROOSEVELT STORY
President Roosevelt loves a
good story. There is one which
he enjoyed so much he shared
it with Prime Minister Church-
ill. Here it is:
A sailor walked into an auc-
tion shop as the auctioneer was
asking for bids on a parrot.
"Fifteen dollars," said the
sailor.
"Twenty," said another bidder.
"Twenty-five," said the sailor.
"Forty," said the other bidder.
"Forty-five," said the sailor.
No further bids were heard, and
the auctioneer said, "Sold."
The sailor took the bird and
cage, passed over the money
and said: "That's an awful price
to pay for a parrot. Can he
talk?"
"Can he talk!" exclaimed the
auctioneer. "Why, sailor, he was

A NORWEGIAN STORY
The Norwegian Information
Bureau in this country has pub-
lished a book of humor, "He
Who Laughs—Lasts" which is
one of the most interesting com-
pilations of its kind. Here is one
of its stories:
One evening, when moving
pictures were shown in a Nor-
wegian theater of a German ship
unloading food at an Oslo pier,
•ne man could not restrain him-
self.
"Stop the machine," he shout-
ed. "You're running the film
backward."

SCHNORRER'S HOSPITALITY
A schnorrer, standing outside
a kosher restaurant, approached
a prosperous-looking man and
asked for a dime for a cup of
coffee.
"Since when is coffee 10
cents?" asked the accosted map.
"I thought it was only a nickle."
"What," said the schnorrer,
with a feeling of hurt pride in
his voice. "You mean that you
won't join me?" ,

A DISRAELI STORY
Disraeli was fond of Princess
Mary an admired her grasp of
political problems, but he never
permitted her to charm him into
telling cabinet secrets.
One evening at dinner, during
a crisis, in foreign affairs, the
Princess, who was puzzled at
the inaction of the Government,
turned to him and said, "What
are we waiting for, Mr. Dis-
raeli?"
The Prime Minister paused for
a moment, then taking up the
$..enu and studying it carefully,
plied, "Mutton and potatoes,
oUr Highness."

COMPOSER MENDELSSOHN'S
DEBT TO NATURE
A good composer will turn to
'account a suggestion from any
source, however humble. Men-
tdelssohn delighted in acknowl-
edging his debt to nature in
these matters.
Mendelss-ihn and a friend
'were walking in the country one
• . y, and feeling tired, threw
. emselves on the grass and con-
' . ued their conversation. Sud-
.enly the composer seized his
lend by the arm and, whisp-
ered. "Hush!" A moment later
endelssohn told him that a
1 ge fly had just then gone
'.uzzing by and he wished to
-ar its sound die away in the
• • tance.
Mendelssohn was at that time
working on his overture to "A
'Midsummer Night's Dream" and
not long after it was completed.
He then showed his friend a cer-
itain descending bass modulation
ith the remark, "There, that's
e fly that buzzed past us at
honhausen."

Refugees on Staff
Mr. _Kay, who has long been
active in behalf of the Institute
in Detroit, pointed out this week
that "among the 27 members of
the senior teaching staff, a large
percentage of whom are refugees
from Central Europe, are many
scientists and engineers of
world-wide renown, who held
responsible positions as profes-
sors in leading universities or
engineers for large-scale indus-
trial concerns. Thirteen gradu-
ating classes passed final exam-
inations and the graduates work
in Palestine and neighboring
countries with success and often
with distinction. Now, with the
destruction of Jewry in Central
Europe an accomplished fact,
and with technical _ schools in
democratic countries greatly
overcrowded, the Haifa Institute
is destined to become even a
more important center of tech-
nological training for Jewish
youth."
