aimed at annihilating the Jews, quoted Jeremiah 5:31,
We, of the present generation,
which refers to the Dispersion of the Jews and the Destruc- and

tion of the Temple:
in perfect agreement, I believe,

"For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the
anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the
daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands,
saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.' "

The editorial thereupon proceeded to ask whether
Xiitler should be permitted to pursue his policy of mass-
murder, and proceeded to state : "We believe that even
during a war like the present, there are methods of pre-
yenting the enemy from killing his victims in the tens of
thousands. It is not enough to say that after victory all
these crimes will be avenged. Action is needed now, The
XJnited Nations must make known to the enemy through
the usual channels that unless this policy of massacre and
annihilation is brought to an end immediately they will
take such reprisals as may be found necessary."
Declarations have since been issued by spokesmen
effect that theret..:041 be

avenged. It is a response to the cry, in Biblical quotation,
py otiriondon contemporary:

"And he said, what hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's
blood crieth unto me from the ground."

This is a call that goes forth to Jews not to forget the
Sufferings of their kinsmen. And if protests do not help,
immediately, they will at least ease our conscience that
,we were not silent, that we raised our voices in protest,
that we called upon mankind to witness the shedding of
Our brothers' blood.

Tragic War Commentary

Before an audience of 1,500 at Hotel Astor in New
York, last week, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the
`Jewish Agency for Palestine, reported that the British
have not allowed the creation of a Jewish military force,
in spite of assurances given by the Jews that such an army
would be willing to fight anywhere, not only in the Middle
fast.
This is tragic commentary on the war and the ob-
I
jectives of the present struggle. To deny people the right
to self-defense and to participation in a war for justice is
a sad blunder which may even now be responsible for
pome defeats for the United Nations.
Dr. Weizmann emphasized in his report that the Jews
of Palestine will not allow themselves to be killed, and
will not submit to massacres which were the lot of Jews
elsewhere. To guarantee such honorable existence by
Jews, it is essential that our people in Palestine be sup-
plied with the materials of war and that they be given
the weapons with which to defend their positions. When
the call comes to American Jews to make the weapons
for defense available, there should be wholehearted and
prompt response to a great need of the hour.

A Zionist Gain

A plan set forth by Detroit Zionists has borne fruit.
At a recent meeting of the national executive corn-
tnittee of the Zionist Organization of America, Lawrence
W. Crohn proposed that members of congregations of the
Orthodox and conservative schools be enrolled en masse,
since their ideologies definitely lead them into the Zionist
gamp.
Last week, Congregation Ohab Zedtk of Pottsville,
?a., unanimously decided to enroll its entire membership
in the Zionist Organization. Action came after an address
by Simon Shetzer, executive director of the Z.O.A., former
Petroiter.
Thus, Detroit is again pioneering in establishing policy
in Zionist ranks. Should this idea be followed by local
'congregations, the pioneering effort will be all the more
to the credit of local Zionists.

phetic vision has served Israel

WHAT ABOUT OUR
CHILDREN?
Will our children, who were
born and raised in this country,
be aware, when they grow up,
of this great treasure of ours, or
will they be ignorant of its great
importance? We already have in
our midst hundreds of thousands
of Jewish youth who know noth-
ing of our history, of Jewish
ethics and morals, and of our
matchless philosophy and culture.
Their indifference to everything
Jewish is a direct result of their
appalling ignorance, and their
negative state of mind can be at-
tributed to faulty guidance.
A SERIOUS PROBLEM INDEED
Though the situation of the
Jewish education of our youth, or
rather, lack of it, is very serious,
it is, not hopeless. While there
is a spark left, the fire may be
rekindled. Let us make no mis-
take about it, the younger gener-
ation would eagerly follow their
religion if they only had a better
understanding of its relative im-
portance.
As yet, nobody has effectively

answered this challenge. The
great trouble with most of us is,

that we are dormant to this very
pressing problem and we keep on
dreaming our sweet dreams that
our youth will be conscientious
Jews even though We- do not
prepare them for that test. Most
of us are, therefore, bound for a
rude awakening and a great
shock.
A people which does not edu
cate its youth religiously, cuts off
the branches of its future exist-
ence. Such a people will stand
condemned on the Day of Judg-
ment. Death and extinction, God
forbid, will be its just punish-
ment.

agencies included in the set-tip of the war-time movement
formed to serve the needs of the men in the service of our
armed forces.
Possessing a background for service in the last war, it
was a natural task for the Jewish Welfare Board to organ-
ize widespread facilities during the pan few months.
Today, the J.W.B. is represented in 44 states and nine
overseas territories. There are local Army and Navy
Committees in 301 American centers—including Detroit—
and there are functioning committees in Alaska, Bermuda,
British Guiana, British West Indies, Panama Canal Zone,
Hawaii, Newfoundland, Netherlands West Indies and
Puerto Rica.
Of major importance is the announcement that
J.W.B. now serves in 102 U.S.O. operations' and in the
United States and overseas and that 174 field workers
conduct activities in behalf of servicemen. Also, five new
overseas workers have just been appointed, increasing the
number of those active outside this, country to 12.
This is a job of major importance at this time, and it
must be given all possible support, through the USO. It
involves the necessity of strengthening the morale of the
men in the service, and it carries with it the important
responsibility of maintaining courage and faith among
those who are fighting our battle against the destructive
Axis ideologies. It is to be assumed that when the call for
unstinted support for this cause is made, in the fall, there
will not be a single dissenter in our community.

Daudet the Anti-Semite

Leon Daudet, editor of the French Royalist L'Action
Francaise, noted anti-Semite, is dead.
It is said that he was a nationalist, not a Fascist. But
he w. as violent in his anti-Semitism; said that the Jews
of France were "indigestible" and advocated a separate
regime for them ; could not become reconciled with the
fact that Leon Blum was chosen Premier; is quoted as
having said that he would treat Jews with courtesy "but
would no more give them a place in French political life
than give them the Papacy."
His line of thinking was, therefore, typical of the
anti-Semite, even though he may have been of the silk-
gloved variety. That the latest Nazi assaults on his home-
land did not influence him is one of the strange results of
the 'rape of France.

to the Jewish people, of which
we read in the Parsha of this
week, 'he asked for guarantors
that the law be kept. Our Rabbis
tell us that God did accept neith-
er our patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob, nor our Prophets and
great martyrs as satisfactory
guarantors. The only one he ac-
cepted were our children. It is
only through our children, that

the Torah and the spiritual val-
ues of Judaism can be perpet-
uated.

May we live to see the day
when "He shall turn back the

hearts of the fathers to their
children and the hearts of the
children to their fathers." "May
the Redeemer come to Zion,"
and we shall then have the real
"Sabbath Nachamu."
