The Week's Best Stories

REMARKABLE GLASSES
A Jewish peddler walked into
the home of a German anti-Sem-
ite in the hope of making a sale.
The German picked up a pair of
eyeglasses from the Jew's basket,
tried them on, and said:
"What remarkable g l asses
these are! As I look through them
at you I see a dog."
"Is that really so?" answered
the Jew. "Let me try them on."
After placing the glasses securely
on his nose and facing the Ger-
man, the peddler said: "To be
sure, you are absolutely riOlt."

BORROWER AND BANKER
"Mose, I've just been to the
bank to borrow some money and
they told me that all I need is
for you to sign this note and then
they'll give me all the money I
need. Isn't that fine?"
"Harry," replied Mose 're-
proachfully, "you and I have
been friends for so many years,
and yet you go to a bank when
you need money. Shame on you!
Harry, you just go back to the
bank and tell them they should
sign the note, and then I'll lend
you the money, huh?"

SCHMARYA LEVIN'S STORIES
The summer is the ideal time
to' relate a story accredited to
the late Dr. Schmarya Levin,
noted Zionist leader.
Dr. Levin ordered strawberries
..ind cream in a New York res-
taurant. When the dish was serv-
ed he saw a fly on top of the
cream. Calling the waiter he said
to him politely: "Please serve
them separately—the cream and
strawberries on one plate and the
fly on another. I prefer to do my
own mixing."
There is another version to this
story. When a waiter's attention
was called to a fly in a cup of
coffee, he leaned over to the com-
plainer and whispered in his ear:
"Sh . . . Sh . . . Not so loud . . .
They may all ask for it."

LANGUAGE AND—SCOTCH
Mr. Rosen was talking with his
friend when the postman deliver-
ed a letter from his son Jack,
who was away at college.
Opening the letter, Mr. Rosen
was confronted with a long bill
of expenses from his son.
"Hm!" he groaned, "such ex-
penses, and the worst is the lan-
guages."
"Languages?" asked his friend,
"do they cost so much?"
"Jt•st look!" answered Mr.
Rosen, "Scotch, $20."

Dear Boys and Girls:
During the summer months. I

There are many fine jokes and
riddles which will be retold for
your entertainment. When you
hear some good ones, why don't
you send them to me so that I
can print it for everybody's en-
joyment.
I hope you are all enjoying the
nice summer weather.
A pleasant Sabbath to you all.

A JOKE ABOUT "AMEN"
"Buddy" Shulman tells me a
good story. He asks: Why do we
say "Amen" and not "Awoman"
after prayers?
The answer is: Because we sing
"hymns" and not "hers."

THE OLD DEBT: A
STORY FROM THE TALMUD .
When Alexander the Great, in
the course of his conquests, came
into Egypt and founded the city
which bears his name, there came
to him a quarrelsome group of
Egyptians, who wanted to make
trouble for the Jews. And they
made the following complaint
against the Jewish community of
Alexandria:
"Is it not written, in their own
Torah, that when they went forth
out of Egypt, led by Moses, they
borrowed from our ancestors
jewels of silver and jewels of
gold, and all manner of rich or-
naments in which to appear be-
fore their God? These treasures
have never been returned to us.
Is it not time, great monarch,
that justice should be done?"
Alexander summoned the Jews
of the city to answer this charge.
And while the wise men were
discussing the question, and wor-
rying about the answer they
should make, a poorly-c 1 a d
hunchback came in and said to
them: "Masters, let me answer
the question for you. If I make
a mistake it will do no harm, for
you will yet be able to answer."
So it was agreed.
"Is the claim of these Egypt-
ians a just one?" Alexander ask-
ed, when the two groups were
assembled before h i m. T h e
hunchback stepped forward:
"It is just,- great ruler!" he an-
swered. "And we Jews shall be
glad to return the treasure with
interest. But it is also written in
our Holy Book that the Hebrews
were servants to the Egyptians,
and slaved for thein without any
payment, for four hundred years.
Now if they will pay us the
wages of 600,000 people for 400
years, we shall willingly give

Plan for 1943 Does Not In-
clude Large Jewish Ap-
peals Such as JDC, UPA

NEW YORK (JPS) — The
American people are to be asked
to raise $85,000,000 in 1943 for
war appeals, in addition to ap-
proximately $100,000,000 raised
annually for local Community
Chest needs, it is announced
here by Gerard Swope, chair-
man of a National Budget Corn-
mitttee named by Community
Chests and Councils, Inc., to
draft recommendations as to
how much should be given for
war relief and how much each
of the separate causes is to re-
ceive.
The sum of $85,000,000 is ex-
clusive of the campaign which
the Red Cross is to conduct sep-
arately next spring. It is not be-
lieved that the Jewish war re-
lief appeals, involving the large
agencies like the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee and the United
?alestine Appeal, are included
in the announcement made by
Mr. Swope.
