Refugee Governments Act
In Mass Slaying of Jews

Immediate, Drastic Retaliation Must Show Germans They
Will Pay Heavily for Massacres of Innocents, Churchill,
Roosevelt and Stalin Are Told

Christians Denounce Atrocities

British Cardinal Hinsley, on Radio, Challenges Catholics of
Germany to Fight Nazi "Black Deeds of Shame"
Against Jews in Poland

LONDON, (WNS) — The horrible Nazi atrocities_
against the Jews, particularly in the case of Poland, are
producing repercussions in wide circles.. This week the
Allied Refugee Governments decided to send a joint diplo-
matic note to Churchill, President Roosevelt and Premier
Stalin asking for measures which will make Germans

realize that they will pay heavily4)
for the massacres of Jews and
innocent civilians.
The Polish National Council, at
the conclusion of a two-day ses-
sion devoted to the question of
the Nazi atrocities against the
civilian population in Poland,
adopted a resolution appealing to
the United Nations to devise at
once retaliatory measures.
The resolution stated that the
Nazis are now carrying out "a
plan to slaughter practically the
whole Jewish population of Po-
land."
The London Daily Telegraph in
an editorial declared that the at-
tempt to exonerate the German
people misrepresents the facts.
"It is improbable that the Ger-
man people are ignorant of the
truth. It is fair to assume that
even Goebbels cannot deceive
them all the time, and it will be
fair to act on that assumption
when the day of reckoning
comes,"

"SILENCE TO CRIMES MAKES
MOCKERY OF PRAYERS"
LONDON, (JPS)—Cardinal Ar-
thur Hinsley, British Roman
Catholic Primate, took up the
cudgels against Nazi atrocities in-
flicted on the Jews in Poland, in
a radio address broadcast to Ger-
many.
Strongly denouncing German
policies, Cardinal Hinsley urged
German Catholics to resist such
crimes.
"Let me say a word to the
Catholics in Germany," he plead-
ed. "You have heard what Pope
Pius XI told you about the per-
secution of Jews in your once
noble country. Hear now what
Pius XII has to say about the
more savage persecution in Po-
land. He declares that he has
been convinced of the truth of
the reports he has received on
Poland. The ferocity of the Nazi
persecution is directed not only
against the Polish clergy and
Polish religious rites, but against
religion in general.
"Listen, Christians of Germany,
to this appeal. Let us pray that
Christian people everywhere, and
you, my fellow Christians in Ger-
many in particular, may listen to
the voice of reason and resist
these black deeds of shame. To
condone them, to pass them over
in silence, would make a futile
mockery of your prayers."
DEFIANT BELGIAN CLERICS
ISSUE PASTORAL LETTER
The defiant clerics of Belgium
are keeping alive their battle
against intolerance, the Nazis and
the racial laws promulgated by
the Germans, it is reported here.
The• heads of the Belgian
churches have issued another pas-
toral letter to their communities
in which they call Nazi anti-
Jewish legislation "anti-Chris-
tian" and "against the spirit of
Catholicism."
NAZI TERRORISTS TO BE
TRIED AS MURDERERS
After Stanislaw Mikolajczyk,
Minister of the Interior of the
Polish Government-in-Exile, cited
statistics which reveal the terrific
" loss of life caused by Nazi sadism
in Poland's ghettos, Brendan
Bracken, British Minister of In-
formation, assured the Polish
Government that Nazi terrorists
would be tried as murderers. .
The gory account of Nazi kill-
ings as related by the Minister,
prompted Mr. Bracken to state:

ARCHBISHOP CONDEMNS
ANTI-SEMITIC LAWS

NEW Y O R K, (Religious
News Service)—A letter con-
demning Marshal Petain's anti-
Semitic laws has been sent to
a Toulouse rabbi by the Roman
Catholic Archbishop of Toul-
ouse, the Most Rev. M. G.
Saliege, according to Pour La
Victoire, Free French news-
paper published here.
Recalling the statement by
Pope Pius XI that "we Cath-
olics are spiritual Semites,"
Archbishop Saliege is reported
to have said that for that rea-
son Catholics are "deeply af-
fected by the tragedy which
has befallen the people of
Israel." In his letter, the Arch-
bishop asked the Almighty to
relieve the sufferings of the
Jewish people.

"The Governments of the United
States, Britain and all the United
Nations are in complete agree-
ment on this question, that every
care should be taken to obtain
the names of persons responsible
for these crimes, that they should
be brought speedily to justice at
the conclusion of the war and
that their punishment should fit
their crimes. The-punishment in
many cases," he said, "will be
the severest known under any
law."
308,770 JEWS KILLED
Figures offered by the Minister
of the Interior are as follows:
200,000 Poles and 300,000 Jews
killed outright by the Nazis; 500,-
000 Jews and non-Jews deported
to the Reich for slave labor; 170,-
000 forced into the Nazi army;
2,500 Jews killed in Novogrodek;
1,800 in Volozhyn; 4,000 in Kaj-
danow; 350 in Opel and 120 in
Wawolinka. The report was sub-
stantiated by photographs of
countless victims in Polish cities.
These statistics exclude victims

Facts pierce even the thick-
