Million Jews Already Mur-
dered, Altman Declares;
Lauds Brown, Dingell
Describing the tragedy of Jews
under Nazi rule, Hyman Altman,
in an appeal on his radio hours
on Station WJLB Saturday night
and Sunday noon, called for an
expression of opinion in condem-
nation of the atrocities of Hit-
lerism.
Mr. Altman stated that 1,000,-
000 Jews already had been mur-
dered. He enumerated the ter-
ritories where the atrocities took
place and called attention to the
demonstration to take place at
Madison Square Garden, New
York, next Tuesday, under the
auspices of the American Jewish
Congress, Bnai Brith and Jewish
Labor Committee.

AN EXTRAORDINARY DUEL
He looked about him. Only
one gun was left and its gun-
ner was killed. With the creak-
ing and rattling of caterpillar
treads, the German tanks were
approaching.
Those Russians left alive were
now witnesses of an extraordin-
ary duel. The weedy young
stranger took his place by the
gun, sighted it and fired. The
head tank burst into flames,
forcing the column to halt Then
the Germans opened a concen-
trated fire on the sole surviving
gun.
Delighted with his first sue-
cess, Efim brought the shells
himself, sighted the gun and
fired. His reward was four
tanks transformed into blazing
torches.
Three bullets had lodged in
the gunner himself but he still
contrived to carry on the shoot-
ing. It was the fourth bullet
that did for him. Losing con-
sciousness and strength all at
once, he fell, dragging the firing
lanyard down with the weight
of his body. It was the last
shot fired by that gun; almost
at the same moment it was hit
and put out of action.

CITED AFTER RECOVERY
But the strain of the artillery
duel had been too much for the
Germans' nerves. They had lost
half their tanks. The surviving i
machines, which were badly
damaged, turned back. So anx-
ious were they to clear out that

the Germans didn't even notice
that they had succeeded in
wrecking the last Russian gun.
The news of the gunner's gal-
lant conduct reached the com-
mander's ears and it was decided
to recommend him for distinc-
tion. Then it appeared that no
one knew the hero's name or
in which hospital he was lying.
Efim recovered. Recently he
came out of the hospital. As
luck would have it soon after
his recovery he happened to
bump into an artilleryman who
had witnessed the memorable
duel.
A week passed. Then an ob-
scure Jewish family, by the
name of Dyskin, was astonished
to receive a communication to
the effect that the title "Hero of
the Soviet Union" had been con-
ferred on Efim Dyskin.
