It is the Nazi invasion which is being recognized as a major danger to the elements of decency in the world. The United Nations recognize the necessity of putting an end to this plague. And if the Egyptians themselves do not appreciate the importance to world peace of a check on Nazism, then they, like their ancestors nearly four thousands years ago, will be the worst sufferers. The Nazi victories in the desert are certain to be of short duration. This is a war to a finish, and it can not and will not end until victory is guaranteed for world decency. Therefore, let there be no despair during temporary German triumphs. The hour of retribution is approaching and mankind will soon rejoice over the end of the decade of barbarism. Valuable Information -- "The Story of the Jews in the United States" is the title of the first of a Jewish Information Series of pam- phlets, to be issued by the Jewish Welfare Board and the American Association for Jewish Education, for Jewish men in the armed forces of the United States. The publication of this series is a great contribution towards strengthening the morale of our men, through information. It is not enough that our men be provided with entertainment and means for relaxaion. There are times when men in the service need to explain to their comrades in arms how extensive Jewish eontributions have been toward' the upbuilding of this land. This pamphlet renders this service. It traces the history of the Jews in America from Columbus through ttre various periods of American history, down to the present day. It gives the reader an idea of the Jews who have rated among the great Americans, of the part our people played in the Colonial Revolutionary periods, it lists the Jewish heroes in American wars, it reveals that seven Jews won the Congressional Medal of Honor and that three of John Brown's group were Jews. Furthermore, this interesting pamphlet relates the part Jews have played in the First World War, when 290,- 000 Jews were members of the U. S. armed forces, that nearly 3,000 made the supreme sacrifice and that many were wounded. The Jewish Welfare Board and the American Associ- ation for Jewish Education are to be commended to producing this valuable brochure. Anti-Semitic Tricks In letters to editors of American newspapers, pro- Nazi, anti-Semitic groups have managed to make propa- ganda for their un-American ideas during the past few years. Lately, we are warned by Richard E. Gutstadt, national director of the Bnai Brith Anti-Defamation League, letters, supposedly written by Christian- have been sent to "Voice of the People" columns praising the virtues of Jews and lamenting the faults of Christians. The conclusion arrived at by these letter-writers, that Jews should assume leadership in this country, is a very evident attempt to arouse people to thinking that Jews are either already controlling leadership or are aim- ing to acquire such control. The warning to newspaper editors to be on guard against such destructive propaganda is timely. The sub- versive elements have not ended their activities, in spite of Pearl Harbor. Whenever they show a tendency of renewing their un-American tactics, they should be ex- posed and should be treated as traitors to our country in this hour of national crisis. Irving Berlin's New Hit Irving Berlin's "This Is the Army" is a great success. This sequel to "Yip, Yip, Yaphank" of 1918 is not only aiding the Army Emergency Relief Fund but is an im- portant medium in strengthening morale among men in the service as well as the population at large. Besides, "This Is the Army" is good satire. For instance, the melody "Aryans Under the Skin" is sung by the "Japs and Germans" in the play. The country at large owes Mr. Berlin a debt of grati• tude for repeating in 1942 the services he rendered in 1918. THEY'RE GIVING ALL—BACK THEM UP! The Weektly Sermonette - EVERY DOLLAR YOU SPARE AND SCRAPE FOR WILL HELP US FIGHT FOP YOU , LAMENT OF EXILE By RABBI ABRAHAM M. DANZIG Congregation Beth •.E1 , Wpm- dotte, Mich. . TEXT: For these things do I weep; my eye, my eye runneth down with water; because jar from me is the Comforter that should refresh my soul. My children are in misery because the enemy hath prevailed. — Lamentations, 1.16. For 2,000 years the Jewish people have been mourning the destruction of their temple, land and Kingdom, and their heart- ache today is just as deep and tragic as when the Temple was encircled with flames. Jerusa- lem, the hearth of pure religion, the home of prophecy, t h e sacred fountain of the word of God, is the very emblem of the deathlessness of Rabbi Danzig the spirit. Like the Jew, this Holy City of Israel —the spiritual capital of human- ity that has for ages been the magnetic pole of the love and rev- erence of mankiiid—is deathless; fire and sword and all the en- gines of destruction have been hurled against it in vain. From Shivah Asar b' Tammuz, when the tablets of stone were destroyed, when the enemy of Israel broke through the gate, of Jerusalem, slaughtering our peo- ple, until the Ninth Day of Ab, is known as the Three Weeks, or the Weeks of Sadness. The Talmud Mesichta Tanis tells us that when the Temple was des- troyed, all the young priests as- sembled on the roof of the Tem- ple and held in their hands the keys of the Temple, and they cried out to God, "Lord of the Universe, as long as we were not worthy of continuing our holy work in the Holiest of Holies, we must return to you the keys of our Temple." As soon as these words were spoken, an in- visible hand appeared and took the keys away from them. After returning the 'keys to God the young priests threw themselves into the fire. FAMINE—OLD AND NEW The Midrash relates to us a tragic picture of the destruction, a picture that causes our blood to freeze in our veins, a picture that causes a terrific storm in the Jewish heart. A famine breaks out in Jerusalem. The daughters of Zion wander through the streets of Jerusa- lem seeking a piece of bread to quiet their hunger, but to no avail. They fall in the streets. Babies,- seeking to quiet their hunger, creep up to their moth- ers, but fall away 'without the food they were looking for. History is repeating itself. The very same thing is hap in the ghettos of Europe BIRTH OF MESSIAH The Jews' longing for redemp- tion is not a phenomenon of modern times. It is as old as the G'ulah itself. On the very day that the Temple was des- troyed and the Jews lost their national independence, the Agada tells us, was the Messiah, the future redeemer of Israel, born. If we are once more to be free, we must learn to be self- reliant, self-sufficient, build up our spiritual resources, become strong in our attachment to our heritage, establish our future on WE MUST HAVE THE WEAPONS WITH WHICH TO FIGHT- Buy MORE WAR SAVINGS . BONDS AHD STAMPS The Nazi Murderers Three reports of the current week demand the re awakening of public opinion against the outrageous m murders which /nark the tracks of the Nazis in their a tempt to conquer the world. ."Poland Fights," the organ of American Friends o Polish Democracy and International Coordination Council in its current issue carries a tale of horror. Referring t the order of Nazi General Governor Frank forbiddin anyone to leave the Warsaw ghetto, the story relates tha six men and two women beggars were caught on th "Aryan" side of the wall and were sentenced to death These beggars were 'covered with vermin, dirty and wer unable to read or write. The story further reveals that Homeless children are the scourge of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gangs of them swarm in the streets, begging, stealing. They live and die in doorways, in abandoned ruins, in tibia streets, These children, dirty and wild like animals, often;-Manage to run away from the ghetto. In October, 1941, as a punitive measure and a warning to future offenders, German policemen publicly drowned 30 Jewish children in the water-filled marl-pits near Okopowa Street. These children had been caught trying to escape from the Jewish quarter into the "Aryan" part of the city. A Jewish Telegraphic Agency report from Stockhol states that more than 4,000 Jewish children, 12 to 15 year: of age, have been deported from the Warsaw ghetto-fo slave labor on farms in Nazi-occupied Ukraine. Six hun dred of these children were taken from orphanages an the others were rounded up in schools and on the streets A report submitted at a press conference in Londo by the British section of the World Jewish Congress show that more than a million Jews have died under the rul of Nazism-700,000 in Poland and Lithuania, 125,00 in Rumania and 200,000 in White Russia and the Ukraine Independent Jewish Press Service also reports fro Geneva that 200 Jewish women have been released fro internment camps in occupied and unoccupied France under orders of pro-Nazi leaders, for white slavery Tunis, Algeria and Morocco. It is no wonder that the Polish Government-in-Exil declared from its offices in London that a policy of retalia tion should be adopted by ,the United Nations_ to compe the Germans to cease their wholesale slaughter of Jew and other anti-Nazis. Tales of horror and destruction continue to pile up and nothing but complete defeat\ at the hands of th democracies can stop the Nazi beasts. But even if on) for the record the voices of President Roosevelt, Prim Minister Churchill and other leaders of the United Nation should be added to those of Jewish and Polish leader condemning in tio uncertain terms the worst atrocities i history now being perpetrated by the Nazis. a firm foundation by telling our children how our ancestors were redeemed, and who their re- deemer was. FAITH IN GOD Palestine belongs not merely to Jews who actually live in it, but to all the fifteen million Jews of the Galut, for even if the latter do not derive their material subsistence from its soil, they are dependent upon i life for their spiritual sustenance We must return to God an Torah, and deserve the fuilfil merit of His promise to to these days of sorrow and fast' into days of rejoicing. 0 God is indeed a Kind and Merci ful Father, and He will listen t our prayers and observe our Of forts to deserve His salvation.
