William Friedman, Prominent Civic
Leader, Holds Position of High
Trust in Jewish Community

Few men in the Jewish community of Detroit are as
ell prepared for civic service as William Friedman.
A native Detroiter, he has watched this city grow,

Detroit, and his mother, at the
time of her death, was the oldest
member of Shaarey Zedek in the
number of years of affiliation.
PRESIDENT OF HOUSE OF
CORRECTION 4 TIMES
A graduate of the University
of Michigan Law School, Mr.
Friedman has been practicing
law . here since 1901. His office
is frequently referred to as the
"downtown office of the Jewish
Welfare Federation," because so
many community activities take
place there. One of his associ-
ates, Henry Meyers, is vice-presi-
dent of the Federation and the
former president of the Jewish
Community Center. Another
partner, Myron Keys, is the
chairman of the board of the
Jewish Home for Aged. Inci-
dentally, this partnership has
already exceeded the quarter
century mark.
Mr. Friedman's major civic
position continues to be member-
ship in the Commission of the
Detroit House of Correction—
which dates back to 1926, when
he was appointed by the late
John W. Smith, then Mayor of
Detroit. He was reappointed
continuously by Mayors John
Lodge, Frank Murphy, Frank
Couzens and Edward J. Jeffries,
Jr. He served as president of
the House of Correction Commis-
sion four times.
Will Friedman today holds
another distinction which very
few are privileged to have in
the present national crisis. He
is chairman of the Wayne
County Draft Appeal Board No.
2 which passes on appeals
from many local draft boards.
Geographically the territory
covered by this board is from
the Detroit River to the Six
Mile Road from Mt. Elliott to
Woodrow Wilson Ayes., all of
Highland Park and Hamtramck.
The only appeal possible from
the decisions of this board must
be directed to the President of
the United States.
