the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America, June
28-29, at Riverside Plaza Hotel
in New York, simultaneously with
the annual gathering of the
Rabbinical Council of America.
The theme of the convention
is the role of the Synagogue in
the battle for a free world.
Of specific interest to Detroit-
ers is the report to be given at
the Monday afternoon session by
Rabbi M. J. Wohlgelernter on the
activities and program of the
Michigan Synagogue Conference.
Detroit delegates to the con-
vention include Morris Mohr,
Michigan Synagogue president,
Arthur Gellman, Charles T. Gell-
man, Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka and
Rabbi M. J. Wohlgelernter.
An unprecedented ceremony
will take pYace at the State Pris-
on of Southern Michigan at
Jackson on Tuesday, June 30, at
5:30 p. tn. The inmates of Jew-
ish faith will be presented with
a Scroll by Congregation Bnai
David of Detroit.
On this occasion the Ark, in
which this Scroll will be placed,
will also be dedicated. This Ark
and the Porochos, the velvet
curtains that cover the Ark,
have been made at the Prison as
a gift of the Jewish inmates, who
paid for the materials.
The service of the dedication
will be conducted by Rabbi Josh-
ua S. Sperka, Jewish chaplain of
the prison, and the Cantors' as-
sociation of Detroit. Participating
in this service will be Dr. Gar-
rett Heyns, director of the De-
partment of Corrections, and
Warden Harry II. Jackson of the
State Prison. Following the serv-
ice, a kosher dinner will be
served to the inmates and guests
by the board of trustees of Con-
gregation Bnai David.
The committee of arrange-
ments includes Joseph A. Block,
president of Bnai David; David
J. Cohen, Sidney Gorman, Frank

Shabbat, School
Close for Season
The Oneg Shabbat and Sunday
School classes of Congregation
Beth El, Wyandotte, closed for
the summer.
Rabbi and Mrs. Abraham Dan-
zig taught classes in history, re-
ligion, Ethics of the Fathers, es-
sence of Judaism and current
events.
Upon closing the school for
the year, Meyer D. Stern, chair-
man of the board of education,
presented each child with a cer-
tificate of merit. Those receiving
prizes were:

and Doreen Wolfe of River
Rouge, perfect attendance; An-
nette and Philip Mittleman of
Ecorse, Doreen Wolfe, Richard

Aided by Representatives
From 17 States
Representatives of leading
national Jewish organizations
were joined by representatives of
Jewish communities in 17 states
including Michigan in. associat-
ing themselves with the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress in its ef-
forts to set up a United Jewish
War Effort.
This undertaking will be
launched on Sunday afternoon,
June 28, at Hotel Commodore, at
a conference to be attended by
representatives of Jewish organ-
izations.
More than 1000 delegates are
expected to participate in the de-
liberations.

Sisterhood of Congregation
Emanuel will close the season
with a luncheonette meeting in
the social hall of the Synagogue

son Ayes__ Monday, June 29, at

Juniors To Hold
Annual Dance At
Shaarey Zedek
The annual informal dinner of
the Junior Congregation of
Shaarey Zedek will be held this
Sunday in the social hall of
Shaarey Zedek. Dancing will be
from 9 to 1 o'clock. Refreshments
will be served.
Members will be admitted free

The first meeting of the execu-
tive committee of the National
Federation of Temple Secretaries
will be held this week-end at
Temple Beth El, Detroit. Repre-
sentatives of six cities will be in
session.

Prays for Fiance at
Downtown Synagogue
As mourners were reciting the
Kaddish at the Downtown Syna-
gogue one day last week, a young
lady came in and said she want-
ed to pray for her fiance who is
in the army. Rabbi Herman Ros-
enwasser thereupon guided her
in her devotions and recited a
special prayer with her for the
safe return of her fiance and for
victory for the democracies.
TEMPLE ISRAEL
Sabbath Eve services of Tem-
ple Israel are held every Friday
night at 611 Boulevard Bldg.,
Woodward at Grand Blvd., at
8:30.
On Friday night, June 26, Stan-
ley Wise, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Wise, will celebrate his
Bar Mitzvah.
During the summer the Friday
night services are scheduled to
last three quarters of an hour.
