Rabbi Wise reported . . . Weiz-
mann told a story of his early
efforts in Russia to convert Jews
to Zionism. One of the --alicemen
who picked him up outside the
Pale of Settlement asked Weiz-
mann what he was doing in town.
He replied that he was trying to
organize Jews to go to Palestine
to rebuild the ancient homeland.
"That's swell," said the Czarist
cop, nut vou better go to Odessa
and peddle your goods there."
He added: "And anyhow, what
do you want to set up the Jews
for? When the Kingdom of the
Jews is established, you'll be the

Zionist leader's reply . . . Sidney

the idea of the dinner and put
it through after everybody had
told him it would be a failure. It
was a failure to the hundreds
who couldn't get into the huge

Leon Kay, prominent Detroit
Zionist, was re-elected secretary.
Benjamin Wilk, a leader in
Temple Beth El, was re-elected
treasurer.'
Fred M. Butzel was re-elected
honorary chairman of the Detroit
chapter. --
A distinguished guest at the
meeting was the national chair-
man .of the society—Lazarus
White, one of the most prominent
civil engineers in the world.
As guest speaker, Lawrence W.
Crohn, chairman of the Zionist
Council of Detroit, described
current activities in Palestine and
showed how Jews are not only
fighting for, the democracies but
are also making important eco-
nomic contributions to Palestine's
upbuil ding.
The Hebrew Institute of Tech-
nology in Haifa is one of the most
important schools of higher
learning of its kind in the Middle
East. It trains skilled craftsmen
who have proven valuable in im-
portant war industries. Its fac-
ulty includes a number of
refugees from Germany whose
outstanding scientific accomplish-
ments are now transferred for
service for the democracies
against the Axis.
NATIONAL PATRONS
Among the national patrons of
the American society of the Haifa
Institute are the following:
Dean Collins P. Bliss, president,
Engineering Index; Dr. Karl T.
Compton, president, Mass. Int. of
Technology; Dr. Harvey N. Davis,
president, Stevens Inst. of Tech-

for Palestine; Harry Scherman,

to win support for their anti-
Zionist cause.
In his statement, Rabbi Wolsey
asserted that "the purpose of the
meeting was entirely to stress
the religious phase of Jewish life
and to oppose that type of na-
tionalism and secularism which
are altogether alien to Jewish
ideology". He said that the con-
vention "adjourned with a mo-
tion that the statement of prin-
ciples should be referred to every
member of the group and to
those sympathetic with our posi-
tion, in order that each one
might be able to give it thought-
ful consideration and offer sug-
gestions and changes. This will
be done," Rabbi Wolsey prom-
ised, "within 10 days and the
statement will be given to the
public."
Rabbi Wolsey stressed that the
convention was "entirely execu-
tive" and that the question of the
Jewish Army was "hardly men-
tioned." He also denied that the
"question of immigration of Jews
to Palestine" was not discussed
at the anti-Zionist meeting.
