Council of Women
Has Bundles Drive
When the National Council of
Jewish Women adopted a pro-
gram of immigrant aid at the re-
quest of the United States gov-
ernment 47 years ago, each local
council unit agreed to do its
share to foster that program. The
Detroit section is now in the final
Ikeek of the campaign to raise its
$1,500 quota to assist in this na-
tional program.
President Roosevelt's Advisory
Committee has designated the
council as an accredited agency
to advise and assist in the prepar-
ation of affidavits to make pos-
sible the emigration of relatives
and friends of United States
citizens.
The service to the Foreign Born
Committee in time of war has a
vital connection with Civilian
Defense. During the Alien Regis-
tration period, the Detroit Coun-
cil alone contacted more than
1,000 people to notify them of the
importance of registering, and
helped them fill out the forms
used by the government.
Council maintains a permanent
staff of trained workers at vari-
ous ports of entry in this coun-
try. Council workers help arriv-
ing immigrants with baggage in-
spection, and with further trans-
portation arrangements.
This year, Mrs. Lawrence
Freedman is chairman of Coun-
cil's Port and Dock Fund Rais-
ing Committee which is solicit-
ing members for bundles, of at
least $5 in value, to be salvaged
from the homes and sold at Coun-
cil's Resale Shop. Miss Henriet-
ta Robinson, Mrs. Leonard Cohen
and Mrs. H. VanBaalen are co-
chairmen of the Service to For-
eign Born Committee for the
e ,, ming year.

Mrs. Henry S. Hendricks An
Eighth Generation American
By RUTH KARPF
Copyright, 1942, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.
I would like to start this tin
type of Mrs. Henry. S. Hendricks
by repeating to you the story of
an event that took place in Eng-
land about 100 years ago.
Benjamin Disraeli, later Lord
Beaconsfield, never got on very
well with Gladstone, his col-
league in the House of Commons.
Once, fighting about the Corn
Law, Gladstone, as a last resort
to hit at Disraeli, made an anti-
Semitic remark. Whereupon
came Disraeli's classic retort:
"Yes, Sir, I am a Jew, but when
your ancestors were painted sav-
ages in the jungle, mine were
high priests in the temple of
Solomon."
DAUGHTER OF AMERICAN
REVOLUTION
Mrs. Henry S. Hendricks, an
eighth generation American, a
Daughter of the American Revo-
lution, gave the modern, 1942
version of the same idea. "The
only way we Jews can keep our
self-respect in these days of 'su-
perman' ideology and Goebbels
propaganda is by a real knowl-
edge of our religion and our his-
tory, by an understanding and
appreciation of our Bible. Never
before has Jewish education been
so important to the Jews of
America as it is today." That is
why Mrs. Hendricks spends a
good deal of her time—very
much in demand for a lot of
things—on the Women's Institute
of Jewish Studies of which she
is chairman, has been chairman
for four years.
