PLAY ON WORDS
What you can do in Yiddish
u sometimes can not do in
lish. The juicy Yiddishisms
often untranslatable, and a
dy in contrasts is most en-
taMing.
ake for instance the saying:
os wet zein der sof?" You
translate it figuratively, as:
ow will it all end?"
Isidore Sobeloff, able Execu-
e Director of the Jewish Wel-
Federation of Detroit, dis-
rding the existence of the
brew "sof," meaning end,
ints out that since the last
r in the Hebrew alphabet is
f," the "aleph" can be con-
red the beginning of things
d the "sof" the end.
herefore,
Sobeloff
says,
at's effective in Yiddish is
possible in English. Says he:
ou never hear anyone say,
t will be the Z,' do you?"
at's a nice play on words

the Bible and Haftorahs. Prof.
Mordecai Kaplan and others
have spoken and written on the
subject. The average Jew will
tell you that Jews have been
chosen to suffer.
But there is an excellent ex-
planation in the Talmud, and
Dr. Stephen S. Wise makes use
of it in his Free Synagogue
Weekly Bulletin. Here it is:
"Behold, how the TORAH
selects for the sacrificial altar
only such animals as belong
to the pursued, not the pur-
suers; the ox which is pursued
by the lion; the lamb which is
pursued by the wolf; the goat
which is pursued by the pan-
ther, but none of those which
feed on prey. In like manner
God chose for His own the
persecuted ones: Abel, who
was persecuted by his brother
Cain; Noah and Joseph, who
met with unkindness from
their own brothers. In the
same way God has chosen
Israel from among the seventy
nations, as the lamb hunted,
as it were, by seventy wolves,
that it should bear His law to
mankind."
This is so excellent—not mere-
ly as an explanation of the
term "Chosen People," but as a
definition of right pitched
against might, that it is too good
not to be passed along to as
large an audience as possible.

friends, and as an explanation

THE WAR AND SOCIALISTS
One . of the most prominent
labor lawyers in the country,
Detroit's Maurice Sugar, who
refused to register for the draft
in the last war, made this state-
ment when, at 50, he registered
in the last draft of the present
conflict: "I refused in the last
war because I believed it was
not a war for democracy. My
convictions are just as profound
that this is a war for democracy
and I only regret that I am too
old to participate in the mili-

tary endeavor."
In his very fascinating book,
"Heroes I Have Known: Twelve
Who Lived Great Lives - (a
Simon & Schuster publication),
Max Eastman, in the sketches
on "Greek Drama in Cleveland:
The Trial of Eugene Debs," ex-
pressed the belief that Debs
would have acted as Sugar does

today. Eastman writes: "This is
no place to discuss the relative
merits of the First and Second
World Wars, but I will remark
that I personally think Debs
would have been among the
first of that large mass of his
party who long ago recognized
the necessity of armed resistance
to Hitler."
But Norman Thomas contin-
ues to disagree.
