On the contrary, our campaign this year is a great
task to mobilize all our strength for the retention of our
principles and for the strengthening of those institutions
which make up the Jewish community.
This is a time for each one of us to declare that Jews
as a people refuse to abandon hope, that we adhere to the
tradition of protecting life, that we shall stand by our
fellow men who are lighting on many fronts against the
brutalities imposed upon mankind by Hitlerism.
A campaign like the present one calls for unstinted
giving. Every dollar mIty count in the effort to save addi-
tional lives. Every contribution will serve to protect those
agencies which stand for human freedom and the right to
worship and to act according to our consciences.
This is, therefore, an American campaign. It is part of
the effiiirlo strike a blow at the menace of the destructive
influences which seek' to undermine decency in the world.
Every Jew is summoned to hold up high the banner
of democratic ideals, and the Allied Jewish Campaign is
the symbol of this tight for Jews, on the philanthropic
front. There should not be a single refusal either to give,
or to increase one's contribution to the present Allied Jew-
ish Campaign.
Sen. Brown's Opposition
Gerald L. K. Smith, one of the men who is considered
to be following a dangerous line in opposing the present
administration in our war crisis, has announced that he is
considering becoming a candidate for the United States
Senate against, the incumbent, Senator Prentiss M. Brown.
Why such a move?
The answer is obvious.
Senator Brown is a liberal. Senator Brown has fought
racial and religious prejudice. Senator Brown has opposed
the Coughlinites and the crack-pots in this country. Sena-
tor Brown is a New Dealer.
Now, this man Gerald L. K. Smith, who has been
fighting labor, who was affiliated with the late Hugh Long
and Father Coughlin, wants to displace Senator Brown.
If we know the voters of Michigan and understand
them as we believe we do, we know what the answer will
be to the candidacy of Gerald L. K. Smith. There may be
and 'ponder upon the institution
of "Jobel," we shall find em-
bodied and indicated in the
structure and ramification of this
great Law the four Jewish free-
doms which in their composite
and combination, constitute the
true dignity of man, the true
characteristic of the "Ebed
Adonai," of the true servant of
God!
"Ye shall sanctify the fiftieth
year." The very concept of
"Sanctification" presupposes and
premises the spiritual freedom of
man, that man is endowed with
the moral power to rise in his
actions and deeds above the
brute, that if he but wills, he has
the power to burst the fetters of
the body, the bonds of his ani-
mal appetites. The fiftieth year
in distinction of the labor years
was hallowed, consecrated and
set apart to the pursuit of the
higher sanctities and values of
life.
"Ye Shall Proclaim Liberty"
"Ye shall proclaim liberty unto
the land and all its inhabitants."
This proclamation of the "Jobel"
refers to and affirms the physical
freedom of man and was des-
tined to become the driving force
in the holy history of human
freedom, was to give birth and
rise to revolutions and evolutions
and ultimately to be engraved
with letters illuminated by per-
petual flames on the Liberty
Bell! This declaration became
the Magna Charta of the truth
that every man with the spirit
of God is a little or rather a
great world in and unto himself,
that no human being was created
to serve as means and tool to in-
crease the wealth and power of
another more aggressive and less
conscientious fellow-man!
of Executive Director of Army Emergency Relief. General
Phillipson was born 60 years ago in Dowagiac, Mich., was
graduated from West Point in 1904, commanded the
142nd and 143rd regiments in the First World War and
was decorated several times for valor under fire.'
Many Jews today are following in the footsteps of
General Phillipson and are making Army life their career.
There is good reason to hope and to believe that they will
be as successful as the Jewish general who is a native of
our state.
The Foreign-Language Press
Attorney-General Francis Biddle has informed Rep.
Samuel . Weiss of Pennsylvania that "the policy of the
Department of Justice is not to suppress foreign-language
newspapers. Appropriate action against seditious news-
papers will be taken regardless of the language in which
they are printed, but those loyal to the United States have
nothing to fear."
This is straight-from-the-shoulder talk which
should go a long way to dispell any fears that we are be-
coming ultra-reactionary as a result of the war. The basic
principles of democracy, freedom of thought, of academic
liberty, freedom of worship, continue to function as the '
basic ideals of America. As long as liberty-loving men are
entrusted with the power to legislate for us, we are safe.
Based on Attorney-General Biddle's statement, we are
justified in feeling confident that basic liberties will not
be affected by the war.
The "Voices of Defeat ',
The anti-Semites are on the run. From all quarters
come revelations of activities by pro-Axis groups which
horrify the imagination and expose the Jew-baiters as
the enemies of democracy and of the most sacred Ameri-
can principles.
Among the most important factual exposes of sediti-
ous elements was the article on "Voices of Defeat" in Life
Magazine. It- showed clearly the existence of dangerous

Aid for Polish Jewry
Starvation and suffering has been made the lot of the
Jews of Poland, and their misery is compelling considera-
tion of a program of relief which may make it possible for
food and medicaments to be sent to the millions of un-
fortunates who are under the heel of Nazism.
The leading American Jewish organizations—Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, Bnai Brith, American Jewish Con-
gress, Jewish Labor Committee, together with the Joint
Distribution Committee—have considered a plan of action,
responding to a call of the General Jewish Council.
It is to be hoped that some form of relief work will
materialize from these discussions. There are difficulties
created by the war which place obstacles in the way of
transportation of these necessities, and there is fear in
some quarters that_these materials may be acquired by
the Nazis for their own use. Should these obstacles be
overcome, no sum should be considered large enough to
provide the required help, and the resulting gathering of
funds will be the most important mercy measure ever
undertaken.
democracy and equity which was

Palestine. Each and every Jew
was to have not only an abstract

conquest of Palestine its soil was
