Two hundred representatives
of 22 Congregations heard the
inspiring address of Dr. Isadore
Goodman, assistant to the Chief
Rabbi of the British Empire,
who was the guest .of honor at
the semi-annual convention of
the Michigan Synagogue Confer-
ence held Sunday, at Congrega-
tion Beth Eefilo Emanuel.
Dr. Goodman, recently arrived
from England, pictured in gra-
phic colors the horrors of the
blitz, and pointed with pride to
the magnificent fortitude of Eng-
lish Jewry and its ability to
"take it" because of its excellent
organization and unification of
its ranks.

TAKES ACTION
As an immediate result of Dr.
Goodman's plea for unity came
the decision of the Michigan
Synagogue Conference to inte-
grate itself with the Union of
Orthodox Congregations of
America, country wide federa-
tion of traditional synagogues,
and participation in the Union's
national convention in Nei.-
York on June 28 and 29.
Dr. A. M. Hersh-man of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, mem-
ber of the Church and Syna-
gogue Protection Council of the
Office of Civilian Defense, a
guest at the luncheon in honor
of Dr. Goodman, called the at-
tention of the assembly to the
immediate needs for air raid
precautions, and warned heads
of synagogues of their grave re-
sponsibility for life and property.
Six rabbis, he revealed, are now
undergoing intensive training as
instructors for air raid wardens.

The morning session was de-
voted to a board meeting of
the Vaad Ha Heshivoth, pre-
sided over by Rabbi Leizer Le-
vin. A financial report, given
by M. H. Zackheim, treasurer,
revealed that since the begin-
ning of the fiscal year, in July,
a total of $39,584 has be4n col-
lected in the Detroit area for
37 Yeshivoth and religious
charities. A number of creden-
tials were refused to solicitors
who could not satisfy the Vaad
of their bona fides.
SCROLLS FOR CAMPS
A request by the Michigan
Bnai Brith Council for co-opera-
tion in the lending of Sifrei
Torah (Scrolls of the Law) to
military camps was referred to
the Religious and Educational
Committee of the Conference.
It was also voted to call atten-
tion of the Detroit Council of
Orthodox Rabbis to the urgent
need for action in the matter
of agunoth, women whose hus-
bands are reported missing in
the war. Rabbi J. J. Nathan, of
Congregation Bnai Moshe, re-
vealed that through the efforts
of the Conference, Hillel Foun-
dation of Bnai Brith was given
sufficient funds to take care of
the Passover meals of all needy
students on the Ann Arbor
Campus.
To meet the growing pressure
of the work, the board of di-
rectors of the Conference voted
to contribute $1,750 annually to-
wards the maintenance of a joint
