ENTERTAINMENT
Event Provides Chief Revenue
to Maintain This Notable
Community Group
By DAVID GOLDBERG
Since 1925 the Halevy Singing
Society has assumed the task of
presenting to Detroit the best in
Jewish music Despite the fact
that the Halevy
has on many oc-
casions been in-
vited to repre-
sent Detroit
Jewry musically
in events of city
wide interest, it
has found its
task difficult,
a n d, seemingly
little appreci-
A ated by the pub-
lic it wishes to
David Goldberg serve.
The 'Halevy finds itself con-
fronted by these problems: How
to interest the Jewish public in
its work—how to acquire suffici-
ent funds to maintain its exist-
ence—and how to remain en-
tirely independent while striving
to accomplish its aims. The way
of an independent musical group
is hard. Most Halevy members
are amateurs who sing only as a
pastime or hobby and have only
a limited knowledge of music.
Consequently, they must spend
considerable time and effort in
preparation for any public ap-
pearance. Such appearances, of
necessity, must be few in num-
ber. The annual concerts, how-
ever, have each year been the
one outstanding presentation of
the Halevy from a Musical
standpoint, while at the same
time serving as its principal
source of revenue.
VARIED MEMBERSHIP
Membership in the Halevy is
open to everyone. Those who
sing are invited to audition any
Tuesday evening in Room 123,
Northern High School. Others
may become patrons or associ-
ate members by making proper
application. The essential' busi-
ness of the Society is conducted
by an executive board, headed
this year by Morris Shatzen.
In order to maintain its strict
independence, the Halevy, unlike
most similar groups, has rejected
affiliation with any other organi-
zation, though it welcomes sup-
Mrs. David Kliger
Honored By Alumni
of H. P. Hospital
MrS. Da-Vid - Kliger (Celia Ber-
lin) was this week honored by
popular vote to serve as toast-
mistress for the annual alumni
banquet of the Highland Park
General Hospital School of Nurs-
ing which will take place Thurs-
day evening at the L'Aiglon in
the Fisher Bldg. This is the sec-
ond time since being an alumnus
that she is so appointed.
Mrs. Kliger, who was an honor
student at the hospital and who
received one of the highest aver-
ages on State Board examinations
in Michigan, has the distinction
being the first Jewish student
ever to graduate from the High-
land Park General Hospital.
Since giving up active hospital
work, Mrs. Kliger has been en-
gaged in Jewish communal activ-
ities. She has just completed two
years as president of the Wo-
men's Auxiliary of Jewish Home
for Aged of which she is now
the advisor, is an active worker
in the Allied Jewish Campaign,
the Maimonides Medical Auxil-
iary and Jewish Community
Council.
BNAI ISRAEL
Congregation Bnai Israel, 268
W. Pike St., Pontiac, celebrated
the occasion of burning its mort-
gage with a dinner last Sunday
evening. Much credit was given
Rabbi I. Strauss for raising the
funds to make this possible. The
speakers were Rabbi I. Strauss,
Rabbi Eric Friedland, of Temple
Beth Jacob, Pontiac, and Dr. M.
Weiss, dean of Yeshiva Beth Ye-
hude, Detroit. J. Bilbert was the
master of ceremonies.
port from all. Likewise, the
Halevy has sung practically
every variety of choral music
available, including liturgical,
folk songs, workers' songs, Pales-
tinian melodies, and songs
in English. It has presented the
music of the masters and of con-
temporary composers—from sim-
ple little melodies to elaborate
oratories.
17TH CONCERT SUNDAY
The hope of the Halevy is
that, within a few years, it can
enlist a sufficiently large num-
ber of patrons and associate
members so that it will not have
any tickets to sell for its con-
certs, but will merely invite its
non-singing members to attend
as a privilege of membership.
The 17th annual concert takes
place on Sunday evening, in the
Scottish Rite Cathedral of Ma-
sonic Temple. The program, as
usual, is a com-
